Chapter 2 - THE VIPER'S NESTBy 3:00 AM, my entire life had been uprooted.

A convoy of blacked-out armored SUVs had swept through my modest apartment complex, packed up my belongings, and retrieved my eight-year-old son, Oliver. When Oliver arrived at the Lombardi estate, he was wide awake, his eyes wide as saucers as he clutched his favorite stuffed bear and his nebulizer kit.

"Mommy?" Oliver whimpered as I pulled him into a tight embrace in the luxurious, cavernous bedroom assigned to us in the West Wing. "Where are we? Why are there men with guns outside our door?"

"It's okay, Ollie," I whispered, holding back my tears as I stroked his soft hair. "Mommy took a very special, high-paying job. We're staying here for a little while. These men are here to make sure no one bothers us."

"Are you fixing a prince?" he asked naively.

I almost choked on a bitter laugh. A prince? No, baby. A monster.

"Something like that, sweetie. Now go to sleep. Mommy has to go to work."

Once Oliver was asleep under the heavy down comforter, guarded by two of Gabriel’s most trusted men, I walked down the dim, marble-lined corridors of the West Wing toward the private medical facility Sebastian had built in the basement of the estate.

The facility was breathtaking. It put state-of-the-art university research hospitals to shame—loaded with anti-gravity treadmills, electromyography suites, cryogenic chambers, and hyperbaric oxygen tanks. Millions of dollars spent on hardware, yet useless without the right software.

Sebastian was waiting for me, sitting in his chair under the harsh fluorescent lights, stripped to the waist. His back was a roadmap of brutal violence—a network of thick, jagged silver scars running from his thoracic spine down to his sacrum.

"Where did the explosion happen?" I asked, putting on latex gloves and pulling up a stool behind him.

"A warehouse in Cicero," Sebastian said coldly. "Twenty years ago. I was twenty-two. My father had just been assassinated, and I took over the family business. Someone planted three pounds of C4 under my car. My driver was vaporized. I survived... barely."

"Do you know who did it?"

"I executed three rival capos within forty-eight hours of waking up from my coma," he said casually, as if talking about the weather. "I thought I eliminated the threat. But over the years, I realized the bomb was placed too precisely. The killer knew my exact routine. It was an inside job."

I gently laid my hands against his lower spine, locating the exact fascial knot I had triggered earlier.

"When I touch here," I said, applying firm, deep tissue pressure, "what do you feel?"

Sebastian gritted his teeth. A bead of sweat formed on his temple. "Nothing... wait. A burn. Like hot needles pushing into my left thigh."

"That's referred pain," I said excitedly. "The nerve root isn't dead! It's dormant. Trapped under years of deep scar tissue inflammation."

I began working the tissue, using a precise cross-friction massage technique designed to break up deep fascial adhesions. It was brutal, agonizing work for the patient.

Sebastian didn't utter a single groan. His jaw was clenched so tight I thought his teeth would shatter, but his eyes remained laser-focused on the wall ahead.

"You have incredible pain tolerance," I remarked, sweating from the sheer physical effort required to work through his dense muscle tissue.

"Pain is just information," Sebastian growled through gritted teeth. "It tells you you're still alive. For twenty years, I felt nothing. I prefer the pain."

Suddenly, the heavy metallic door of the medical suite slid open.

Gabriel stepped inside, his phone held tightly against his ear. His face was grave.

"Boss," Gabriel said, ignoring my presence. "We have a massive situation. The Moretti family just hijacked our shipment at Pier 42. They took out four of our men. And..." Gabriel hesitated, looking at me nervously.

"Speak," Sebastian ordered, his voice dripping with venom.

"Don't filter anything in front of her. She's in the circle now."

Gabriel swallowed hard. "Moretti sent a message through the wire. They know you hired a private physical therapist. They know her name. They know about her son."

My heart stopped. The blood drained from my face. I stumbled back from Sebastian's chair, my hands trembling violently.

"What?" I gasped, my voice cracking. "How do they know? I've only been here for four hours!"

Sebastian’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal rage. He didn't look at me; he looked at Gabriel.

"There is a leak," Sebastian said softly. "A high-level leak inside this house. Someone told Moretti that I found someone who might fix me."

"Why would they care if you can walk again?" I screamed, panic overtaking my senses. "Why does my son's life have to be put on the line for your stupid mob war?!"

Sebastian turned his chair toward me. In one swift, terrifying movement, he reached out, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me close. His grip was like steel, but his eyes held a strange, blazing intensity.

"Listen to me, Claire," Sebastian whispered, his voice trembling with dark authority. "They care because an immortal boss in a wheelchair is predictable. They can manage me. They can plan around my physical limitations. But a Lombardi who stands up? A Lombardi who can march back into the streets and hunt his enemies himself? That terrifies them. If I walk, their power vanishes."

He tightened his grip slightly, forcing me to look directly into his eyes.

"I will put fifty armed guards outside your son's door," Sebastian promised. "No one touches a hair on his head while I still draw breath. But you cannot quit now. If you leave this house, Moretti will snatch you in ten minutes to find out what you know. Your only path forward... is through me."

May you like

I trembled, trapped between the monster in front of me and the monsters waiting outside.

"Then let's get back to work," I whispered back, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Because if I'm going to survive you, Sebastian Lombardi... I need you on your feet."
