Chapter 4 - THE RED VENOMThe discovery of Sebastian's recovery sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld.

Within hours, the estate was placed on absolute Lockdown Alpha. The Commission was terrified; rival families were scrambling; and Julian was frantic.

That night, a emergency meeting of the Syndicate high council was called in the estate’s subterranean boardroom. Sebastian sat at the head of the long mahogany table in his wheelchair, maintaining the illusion that he was still bound to it, while I stood in the adjacent glass monitoring room with Gabriel, keeping a watchful eye on his vital signs via a wireless telemetry monitor attached to his chest.

"He's pushing his blood pressure too high," I whispered to Gabriel, watching the red digital numbers jump on my screen. "180 over 110. His nervous system is under extreme stress."

"He has to do this," Gabriel replied coldly, his eyes scanning the security cameras monitoring the boardroom. "If he shows weakness tonight, the bosses will vote to remove him under Article 4 of the Syndicate charter. They will call him unfit to lead."

Inside the boardroom, Julian was pacing back and forth, holding a thick ledger.

"Sebastian's recovery is a miracle, yes!" Julian yelled, addressing the six syndicate capos seated around the table. "But it is an unpredictable liability! Look at the facts! The Moretti family has seized three of our shipping docks in the last forty-eight hours because Sebastian is distracted by his private medical experiments! He is prioritizing a female civilian therapist over the security of our territory!"

"I am prioritizing my ability to tear the Moretti family apart with my bare hands," Sebastian said coldly, his voice slicing through the noise. "Which of you capos wants to challenge my leadership while I am still sitting in this chair?"

The room went dead silent. None of the hardened killers dared to meet Sebastian's gaze.

"That's what I thought," Sebastian sneered. "Meeting adjourned. Gabriel, clear the room."

The capos quickly filed out, looking terrified and uneasy. Julian remained, glaring at his brother with unadulterated venom.

"You think you're invincible, don't you, Sebastian?" Julian spat, leaning over the table. "You think because a pretty nurse made your leg twitch, you're the king again? You're a dinosaur. And dinosaurs get extinct."

Julian turned and stormed out of the boardroom.

Twenty minutes later, Sebastian returned to his private quarters. He looked completely drained. The sheer physical toll of holding his body upright earlier, combined with the extreme stress of the council meeting, had exhausted his newly awakened neural pathways.

"You need to rest," I said firmly, bringing a tray with a high-protein recovery smoothie and his prescribed nerve-toning medication to his desk. "Your nervous system is on the brink of neuro-genic shock. If you push too hard, you could cause a permanent relapse."

Sebastian looked up at me. His face was pale, dark circles bruising the skin under his eyes.

"I don't have the luxury of rest, Claire," he murmured softly, reaching out and gently taking the glass from my hands. "Julian is moving pieces on the board. He's desperate. And a desperate Lombardi is a lethal creature."

"Then let Gabriel handle the streets," I pleaded, stepping closer. "Let me do my job. You promised me you would protect Oliver. You can't protect anyone if your body breaks down!"

Sebastian looked at me for a long moment. He reached out, his big, calloused hand cupping the side of my cheek. The touch was surprisingly soft, devoid of any mob boss brutality.

"You care about me," he stated softly, as if discovering a strange new scientific fact. "Not because of my money. Not because of my power. You actually care if I live or die."

"I care about my patient," I lied, my heart fluttering wildly at his touch. "And... I care about the man who promised to build my son a playground."

Sebastian smiled faintly—a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his ruthless face.

He lifted the smoothie glass to his lips and drank it in three long swallows.

"Get some sleep, Claire," he whispered. "Tomorrow, we try walking without the parallel bars."

I nodded, feeling a strange warmth in my chest as I left his quarters and walked down the quiet hallway back to Oliver's room.

Two hours later, a blood-curdling scream shattered the silence of the West Wing.

I bolted out of bed, my heart instantly leaping into my throat. The scream wasn't coming from Oliver—it was coming from Sebastian’s master suite!

I ran through the corridor, past two guards who were frantically radioing for backup. I slammed open Sebastian’s double doors.

The scene inside was pure terror.

Sebastian was on the floor, thrashing violently in full-body convulsions. Blood was streaming from his nose and mouth, splattering across the white marble floor. His eyes were rolled back into his head, his muscles locking in horrific, rigid spasms!

"Sebastian!" I screamed, dropping to my knees beside him.

Gabriel rushed into the room, his gun drawn, looking around wildly. "What happened?! Did someone shoot him?!"

"No!" I yelled, rolling Sebastian onto his side to keep him from choking on his own blood. I checked his pupils—they were completely dilated. His heart rate was spiking to a lethal 220 beats per minute! "He's been poisoned! A high-potency neurotoxin!"

My eyes darted to the empty glass on his nightstand—the glass containing the smoothie I had handed him two hours ago!

"Oh God," I gasped, horrified, as tears flooded my eyes. "The drink... I gave him the drink..."

At that exact moment, the bedroom door burst open again.

Julian Lombardi marched in, flanked by ten heavily armed syndicate enforcers.

Julian pointed a finger directly at my trembling, blood-stained form.

"Arrest her!" Julian shouted with furious triumph. "The civilian physical therapist just tried to assassinate the head of the Lombardi family! Take her son, throw them both in the basement vaults, and execute them!"
