Chapter 6 - THE SHADOW EMPIREThe safehouse was a subterranean bunker buried beneath an abandoned meatpacking plant in the industrial heart of South Chicago.

For three days, the world thought Sebastian Lombardi was dead.
Julian had seized absolute control of the Lombardi empire, declaring himself Chairman of the Syndicate. He put a five-million-dollar bounty on Gabriel, my son, and me, telling the media and the underworld that we were high-level assassins hired by the Moretti cartel.
Inside the dark, cold concrete bunker, I didn't care about the news. I cared about keeping Sebastian alive.
The neurotoxin had devastated his nervous system. The rapid neural re-connections we had built over the past month were severely damaged. He was completely bedridden, shivering with high fever, his body trapped in intense muscle spasms.
I didn't sleep for seventy-two hours. I administered IV fluids, continuously massaged his back to prevent deep-vein thrombosis, and used targeted thermal therapy to flush the residual chemical toxins out of his lymphatic system.
Oliver sat in the corner of the bunker, quietly drawing pictures of jets on paper, occasionally walking over to wipe the sweat from Sebastian's forehead with a damp cloth.
On the fourth morning, Sebastian's fever finally broke.
He opened his eyes. The bloodshot redness was gone, replaced by a razor-sharp, chilling clarity.
He looked at Oliver, who was fast asleep on a cot beside his bed, holding his nebulizer. Then he looked at me, sitting in a metal chair beside him, dark circles under my eyes, holding a syringe of saline solution.
"You saved my life again, Claire," Sebastian said softly, his voice raspy but steady.
"That's two miracles you owe me," I murmured, offering a tired smile. "And a very expensive medical bill."
Sebastian reached out, his long fingers gently catching my hand. He brought my hand to his lips and kissed my knuckles softly. The gesture was so tender, so completely devoid of his mafia persona, that my heart skipped a beat.
"I don't owe you a bill, Claire," he said, his eyes burning into mine. "I owe you my life. And the lives of those who tried to take yours are now forfeit."
Gabriel walked into the room, holding a encrypted satellite tablet. His expression was grim.
"Boss," Gabriel said. "Julian has called a full Commission coronation at the Grand Crystal Ballroom downtown tonight. He’s signing a total merger with the Moretti family. They are handing over sixty percent of our shipping territory to Moretti in exchange for total protection. The Commission is endorsing him at midnight."
Sebastian slowly pulled the IV lines out of his arm.
He swung his legs over the side of the bed.
"Sebastian, no!" I protested, rushing to support him. "Your central nervous system is completely unstable! If you try to stand now, the nerve shock could cause a permanent ischemic stroke!"
"Then I will die standing, Claire," Sebastian growled.
He placed his bare feet on the cold concrete floor. He gripped my shoulders for support. Sweat instantly poured off his face as he pushed himself up.
His knees buckled. His body violently trembled.
"I can't..." Sebastian choked out, his eyes wide with rare terror as his legs refused to lock into place. "I can't feel my left foot... the poison... it destroyed the pathway..."
"No, it didn't!" I shouted, holding his heavy body up with all my strength. "Listen to me, Sebastian! Look at me!"
He locked his dark eyes onto mine.
"The pathway isn't gone! It's just terrified!" I cried, placing my hand over his heart. "Your brain is trying to protect you from the pain! You have to fight through the trauma! Don't push with your muscles—push with your hatred! Push with your love for your legacy! MOVE YOUR FOOT!"
Sebastian let out a terrifying, primal roar that shook the concrete walls of the bunker.
He slammed his left foot down.
The nerve ignited!
He took one step. Then another.
Unassisted.
He stood six-foot-two, towering over me, breathing heavily, standing entirely on his own two feet for the first time in twenty years!
Gabriel dropped his tablet, his eyes wide in absolute disbelief.

Sebastian looked down at his own feet. He looked at me, a wild, ecstatic, deadly smile breaking across his face.
"Gabriel," Sebastian commanded, his voice echoing like an apocalyptic trumpet. "Bring me my suit. Bring me my guns. Tonight... we go to the party."
