Chapter 3 - The Hidden VaultBlood Money Beneath the FloorboardsWithin fifteen minutes, the house was turned upside down.

Agents swept through every room with flashlights and tools, pulling down panels, opening vents, and prying open locked closets. Linda was forced to sit on her expensive leather sofa, weeping hysterical tears of rage and denial, while Arthur sat beside her, silent and shell-shocked.

"Boss! We found it!" an agent called out from the basement.

Marcus motioned for me to follow him down the wooden basement stairs. I gripped the railing tightly, my head throbbing, but I needed to see it with my own eyes.

At the far end of the unfinished basement, behind a false wall made of drywall and fake shelving, was a heavy steel floor safe embedded in the concrete floor.

Two agents used a power saw to cut through the heavy lock mechanism. Sparks flew into the dark room, illuminating the dusty air. With a loud CLANG, the safe door was pried open.

Inside weren't just stacks of cash.

There were thick bundles of hundred-dollar bills wrapped in blue plastic tape, multiple encrypted hard drives, and three fake passports bearing Dean’s photo under different aliases. But what made my blood run cold was a small black velvet bag sitting right on top of the money stacks.

Marcus reached in and pulled the velvet bag out. He unzipped it and poured the contents into his gloved hand.

A collection of high-end diamond jewelry spilled out—necklaces, rings, and vintage bracelets.

My eyes widened in horror.

"That's... that's my grandmother's collection," I choked out, tears finally springing to my eyes. "It disappeared from my safe deposit box three years ago. I thought I lost it during the move!"

"He didn't just launder cartel money, Elena," Marcus said, his jaw tightening as he examined the passports. "He was preparing an escape route. These passports have active visas for non-extradition countries. He was planning to clean your family's assets, drain your trust, and leave you holding the bag while he vanished."

Down stairs, Dean was brought down in chains to observe the search. When he saw the open safe and his passports in Marcus’s hands, his knees gave out, and he collapsed onto the concrete floor.

"Elena... please," Dean sobbed, looking up at me with terrified eyes. "I did it for us! I was going to take you with me! We could have started over in South America!"

"With my money? With my grandmother's blood diamonds?" I stepped down off the last step, standing directly over him. The woman who had cowered on the bathroom floor twenty minutes ago was gone.

"You didn't want a wife, Dean. You wanted an insurance policy."

"Take them out," Marcus ordered coldly. "All three of them."
