Chapter 5 - The Trail of DeceitFollowing the PaperworkOver the next three weeks, the true depth of Dean’s betrayal began to unfurl like a nightmare.

With Marcus’s help and a team of forensic accountants, I began digging through the financial ruins Dean had left behind. What we discovered was far worse than simple embezzlement.

Dean hadn't just used my name to open shell companies; he had forged my signature on life insurance policies. Three separate high-value policies, totaling five million dollars, had been taken out on my life over the past two years.

And the primary beneficiary?

Not Dean.

It was a holding company registered under the name of Linda Vance.

I sat in Marcus’s office at the federal building, staring at the notarized signatures on the insurance documents. My hands shook so violently the paper rattled.

"His mother knew," I whispered, the sickening truth settling in my chest. "She didn't just cover for him. She was in on it."

"The night he threw you into the mirror," Marcus said, pointing to the date on the latest insurance addendum, "was the exact day the suicide clause on the five-million-dollar policy expired."

The blood drained from my face.

The coldness in Linda’s eyes that night... the way she calmly reapplied her lipstick while I bled on the floor... it wasn't just arrogance. It was calculation. They weren't just abusing me. They were pushing me to a point of breaking—or setting up an 'accident' that would pay out millions.

"They weren't going to leave me," I realized aloud, looking up at my brother. "They were going to kill me."

"They tried to set up a narrative that you were depressed, unstable, and financially ruined," Marcus explained, his tone laced with venom. "If you died in that bathroom, Linda would have claimed the payout, Dean would have fled the country on his fake passport, and the cartel debt would have been wiped clean."

I leaned back in the chair, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The grief and shock that had held me hostage for weeks suddenly hardened into pure, unadulterated vengeance.

"They want a story about a broken woman?" I said, standing up and smoothing down my jacket. "Let’s give them a court performance they’ll never forget."
