Chapter 8 - The Ultimate TwistThe Puppeteer RevealedI frowned, leaning closer to the screen. "What is it? More bank accounts?"

"No," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave. "We thought Dean was laundering money for the Vasquez Cartel. We thought he was the low-level guy getting paid off."
"Wasn't he?"
Marcus clicked on a file folder labeled PROJECT ARCHITECT.
"Dean wasn't working for the cartel, Elena," Marcus said, looking me dead in the eye. "The cartel was working for him. Or rather... for the person running him."
My heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?"
Marcus opened a series of offshore bank transfers dating back ten years—long before I even met Dean. Millions of dollars had been moved through international accounts, originating from a single primary estate account.
An estate account registered under my late father’s name.
"My... my father?" I stammered, my head spinning. "My father died eight years ago in a car crash!"
"That's what we were told," Marcus said quietly, pulling up an encrypted communication log between Dean and an untraceable IP address logged just three days ago—from inside a private clinic in Switzerland. "Your father didn't die in that crash, Elena. He faked his death to escape an international financial investigation. But he couldn't access his locked trusts without a legal heir activating them."
The truth slammed into me like a freight train.
"Dean... Dean didn't meet me by accident at that coffee shop six years ago," I whispered, the horror mounting in my chest.
"No," Marcus said, opening a photo attachment from the decrypted drive. It showed a recent photograph of my father, alive, well, and standing on a balcony in Zurich. "Your father hired Dean and his family to find you, marry you, and push you to the brink of complete mental collapse. Once you were declared legally incompetent—or once you 'accidentally' passed away—the entire 80-million-dollar family trust would revert to your father’s primary executor."
"Who?" I choked out, tears burning my eyes. "Who is the executor?"
Marcus clicked the last document, bringing up a notarized power-of-attorney form.
Printed at the bottom, signed in fresh black ink, was the name of the primary executor who was supposed to receive the cash the moment I died.
Marcus Vance.
I froze. My breath hitched in my throat.
I slowly looked up from the computer screen to face the man sitting across from me.
The brother who had given me the panic button.
The brother who had brought the federal agents through the door.
The brother who was currently staring back at me with a soft, chilling smile.
"Why do you think I gave you the button with three clicks, little sister?" Marcus whispered, reaching into his pocket and slowly pulling out a heavy black keychain—identical to the one I carried.
"You were never supposed to survive that night in the bathroom," Marcus said quietly. "Dean went off script when he hit you too early. He was supposed to wait until the Swiss transfers cleared tomorrow."
Marcus slowly stood up, placing his hands on the desk.

"Dean thought he was the mastermind," Marcus murmured, his smile broadening. "But he was just the pawn I used to get you into that room... and now, every single person standing between me and eighty million dollars is either dead, in prison... or sitting in this room with me."
Before I could scream, the office door behind me locked with an audible, electric CLICK.
