Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the AshesSix months later, the dust had completely settled.

The media circus had moved on to newer scandals, leaving our lives to return to a peaceful, grounded rhythm. Thorne Enterprises was stronger, cleaner, and more profitable than ever, under my direct, uncompromised leadership. We had restructured our corporate governance, implemented strict ethical oversight committees, and donated a substantial portion of the recovered embezzled funds to child welfare and family support charities across the state.

Our penthouse home had been completely remodeled. The cold marble floors where Ethan had once been forced to crawl in tears were now covered in plush, warm rugs, surrounded by colorful toy chests, art easels, and endless laughter.

Mrs. Higgins still baked cookies for Ethan every Tuesday afternoon, and our bond as a family unit had grown unbreakable.

One evening, after putting Ethan to bed with his favorite dinosaur storybook, I walked out onto the private balcony overlooking the glittering night skyline. The city lights stretched out infinitely into the horizon—vast, beautiful, and completely free.

My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was a formal legal notification from the federal prison intake office.

Richard had officially filed his final appeal, requesting permission to write a letter of apology to Ethan and me.

I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen, and scrolled past the notification without opening the message. I didn't need an apology. Words born of desperation held no value to someone who had learned the hard way that actions have permanent consequences.

I tapped the screen, selected the notification, and clicked Block.
