Chapter 16 - The Trap is Sprung

The next morning, local news vans crowded the end of our street, flashing cameras and thrusting microphones toward our front gate. The headline across the local digital news feed read: Arson at Miller Estate Linked to High-Stakes Family Inheritance Battle.

Julian Vance must have been listening to police scanners because, by 10:00 AM, his polished black sedan was parked right outside our driveway, hazard lights blinking.

I watched from the living room window as Julian stepped out of his car, adjusting his tie with an arrogant smirk, walking straight up to our front porch and hammering on the front door.

Travis opened the door before Julian could knock a second time.

"Mr. Miller! I was horrified to hear about the fire on your property," Julian said smoothly, stepping uninvited into the foyer. "As executor of the late Lorraine Miller’s ancillary holdings, I came by to review the status of the carriage house parcel. Naturally, since the structure is now destroyed, the conditional clause regarding continuous occupancy is officially voided, meaning the land reverts immediately to our commercial trust."

Travis didn't yell. He didn't raise his hand. He simply closed the front door behind Julian, locking it with a sharp, echoing click.

From the hallway, our attorney, Mark, stepped out of the study holding a thick stack of federal paperwork.

Julian’s arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What is this?"

"This," Mark said calmly, stepping up to the table and flipping open the portfolio, "is a federal warrant for wire fraud, extortion, and corporate conspiracy, signed by a federal judge an hour ago."

Julian scoffed, crossing his arms. "You can't touch me. I represent a legitimate legal corporation."

"You represented a shell company funded by embezzled estate assets designed to manufacture fraudulent property claims," Travis said, stepping right up to Julian’s face. "Your sister Brenda bragged about the arson plot in an unencrypted text message to one of Lorraine’s old bridge club friends last night. The cyber crimes division intercepted it at 4:00 AM."

The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. His professional composure cracked wide open.

"That... that's impossible," Julian stammered, taking a step back toward the door.

"Nothing is impossible when greedy people leave a paper trail," Travis said coldly. "Mark, call the marshals."

Two plainclothes federal agents stepped out of our guest study, badges gleaming under the hallway lights, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around Julian Vance’s wrists before marching him out the front door right past the news cameras.
