Chapter 17 - The Cleared Horizon

By mid-summer, the federal investigation into Julian and Brenda Vance had blown wide open, uncovering a massive network of financial manipulation, forged inheritance documents, and retaliatory harassment orchestrated by Lorraine’s inner circle during her final years. Brenda was arrested on charges of accessory to arson and witness intimidation, while the corporate shell companies holding the carriage house liens were permanently dissolved by federal order.
Our street finally went quiet. The news vans packed up and left. The burnt carriage house was completely demolished, leaving behind a clean, open patch of rich soil where Travis and Zia immediately set to work planting a massive summer vegetable garden.
On a warm Saturday morning in July, Zia stood in the middle of the fresh garden patch holding a watering can, wearing her favorite gardening hat.
I walked out onto the back porch with two glasses of iced tea, handing one to Travis, who was leaning against the wooden railing watching his daughter.
"Do you think it's finally over?" I asked softly, resting my head against his shoulder.
Travis took a sip of his tea, looking out over the sprawling green lawn, the blooming flower beds, and the wooden plaque hanging proudly above the kitchen door that read Everyone is Family Here.
"It’s over," Travis said, wrapping his arm around my waist. "The roots are finally clean."

Zia ran over, holding up a small, freshly sprouted tomato plant in her palms. "Dad, Mom, look! The first little tomatoes are growing!"
Travis knelt down in the dirt beside her, gently taking the seedling in his calloused hands. "That’s because we took care of the soil, kiddo. Anything grows if you give it real roots."
