Chapter 6 - The Midnight Intruder

Three nights later, a sharp clatter echoed from the back hallway downstairs.
I bolted upright in bed, my heart hammering against my ribs. Beside me, Travis was already awake, his hand sliding silently toward the heavy flashlight on the nightstand.
"Stay here," he whispered, rolling out of bed with the stealth of a predator.
I grabbed my phone, dialing 911 under the covers while straining my ears to listen. Muffled footsteps crept across the hardwood floors downstairs, followed by the distinct sound of shattering glass. Someone had broken through the rear kitchen window.
I slipped out of bed, checking on Zia in the next room. She was sleeping soundly, curled around her stuffed rabbit. I locked her door from the inside and stood guard, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
Downstairs, a low, furious voice rang out.
"You think you won, you ungrateful bastard? You think a piece of paper can erase forty years of blood?"
It was Lorraine.
I crept down the stairs just far enough to see into the living room. Moonlight poured through the shattered kitchen window. Lorraine stood near the mantelpiece, her hair disheveled, clutching a heavy silver heirloom candlestick like a weapon.
Travis stood ten feet away, hands raised defensively, keeping her between himself and the hallway leading to Zia’s room.
"Mom, put the candlestick down before you do something you can't undo," Travis warned, his voice low and steady. "You broke into your own former house. That’s a felony."
"This is my house!" Lorraine screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "I brought you into this world! I made you who you are! And you traded me for a rented woman and a stranger's brat!"
"Zia is my daughter!" Travis roared back, the absolute fury finally breaking through his composed exterior. "She is the only real family in this house, because the rest of you only cared about what was written on a will or a price tag! It’s over, Mom. It’s time to pack your bags for real and leave this property by morning."
Lorraine’s eyes darted toward the hallway—toward Zia’s room.
"I'm going to make sure that little parasite knows she destroyed this family," Lorraine hissed, lunging forward with the heavy silver candlestick raised high.
I screamed.
Before Lorraine could take another step, the front door burst open with a crash of blue and red flashing lights.
Three police officers flooded the room, their tasers drawn.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it right now!"
Lorraine froze, the silver candlestick slipping from her trembling fingers and clattering loudly against the hardwood floor. As handcuffs clicked onto her wrists, she didn't look remorseful. She looked at Travis with eyes devoid of any human warmth.

"You'll rot in hell for this," she spat as they dragged her out into the freezing night air.
Then, the front door closed, leaving behind an eerie, heavy silence.
