Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW AT THE BALL

The Grand Ballroom of the Boston Park Plaza was a masterpiece of old-world decadence. Gold leaf covered the pillars, crystal chandeliers cast a warm amber glow over hundreds of elite guests, and the sound of a live string quartet drowned out the whispered deals that controlled the city's underbelly.

When Adrian Blackwood entered with Evelyn on his arm, a collective hush fell over the room.

Evelyn was breathtaking, but not in the way the traditional mafia wives of Boston presented themselves. She did not wear bright silks or excessive jewels. She wore a tailored, floor-length gown of deep navy velvet, structured like armor. Around her neck was the legendary Blackwood Sapphire—a stone as cold and blue as the room she had been banished to.

Her skin was pale, her expression serene, and her eyes sharp as glass.

"They're looking at you like you're a ghost," Adrian murmured near her ear as they glided past groups of politicians and mob bosses.

"They expected a victim," Evelyn replied smoothly, keeping a graceful smile on her lips. "It unsettles them to see a partner."

"Don't get ahead of yourself, Evelyn. You're my wife on paper, not my equal."

"Keep telling yourself that, Adrian. It makes it easier for your enemies to miscalculate."

Before Adrian could reply, a tall, impeccably dressed man with silver hair and chilling light eyes stepped into their path. It was Victor Vance—the kingpin of the rival New York syndicate and the man suspected of orchestrating the ambush that had killed Adrian’s older brother three years ago.

"Adrian," Victor said smoothly, raising a glass of champagne. "And this must be the lovely Hart girl. The price of peace, as they say."

"Vance," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave, his hand instinctively resting on the small of Evelyn’s back. The touch was possessive, protective, and surprising to them both. "I didn't expect you to travel so far north for a regional party."

"I came to deliver my condolences in person," Victor said, his eyes scanning Evelyn with a slimy, predatory interest. "I heard your union was... chillier than expected. The rumor in New York is that you keep your new bride locked away in the servant's quarters. Is the Blackwood fortune running low on heating oil?"

Evelyn felt Adrian’s posture stiffen, his muscles coiling like a spring ready to snap. The air around them grew instantly violent.

Before Adrian could speak, Evelyn stepped forward slightly, tilting her head with effortless poise.

"Mr. Vance," she said, her voice clear enough to draw the attention of several nearby council members. "In Providence, we have a saying: a house that heats every room is a house that wastes energy on empty space. My husband keeps me in the north wing because that is where the records are kept. And as you well know, the darkest, coldest corners of Blackwood Manor are where we keep the things that bite."

Victor’s fake smile faltered. His eyes narrowed slightly. "A sharp tongue for a young bride."

"She speaks for the family, Victor," Adrian said, stepping beside her, his hand firmly taking hers, lacing their fingers together in an unmistakable display of unity. "Now, if you'll excuse us. My wife and I have family business to tend to."

As they walked away toward the VIP terrace, Evelyn felt Adrian’s grip on her hand tighten—not in anger, but in something far more dangerous.

"You shouldn't have provoked him," Adrian murmured as they stepped out into the crisp night air of the terrace.

"He was testing your authority," Evelyn said, looking up at him. "If I had acted like a pathetic victim, he would have seen it as a sign that your house is divided. I gave him a threat instead."

Adrian stared at her, the dark velvet of her dress catching the moonlight. "You played a dangerous game in there."

"I've been playing a dangerous game since the day I was born, Adrian," Evelyn whispered.

Suddenly, the door behind them burst open. Noah rushed out, his face pale, sweat glistening on his forehead despite the cold.

"Boss," Noah panted, his hand resting on his hidden holster. "We have a problem. The police just raided the northern distribution hub. And the search warrant... it was signed using information leaked directly from your private safe."
