Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

The explosion blew the heavy oak door off its hinges, sending wooden splinters flying across the room like shrapnel.

Before the smoke could clear, two armed men in tactical gear rushed into the threshold.

BANG! BANG!

Evelyn fired twice without hesitation. The double-tap was precise, striking the lead tactical operator directly in the center mass, dropping him instantly to the stone floor.

Adrian swept low, firing three rapid rounds into the second attacker, taking him down before he could raise his weapon.

"Clear!" Adrian roared, pushing through the doorway into the hallway, his blood dripping onto the floorboards.

Standing in the center of the ruined corridor, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries, was Julian Blackwood. He looked remarkably like Adrian—same sharp jawline, same cold gray eyes—but his face was scarred on the left side, a permanent reminder of the harbor crash.

And standing right behind Julian, holding a silenced pistol, was Noah.

Evelyn stepped out into the hallway, her gun leveled directly at Noah’s chest.

"Noah," Evelyn said, her voice filled with deep disappointment. "I saved your sister."

Noah couldn't meet her eyes. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Blackwood. Julian paid for her medical treatment three years ago. I’ve always belonged to him."

"Loyalty bought with money is just a lease, Noah," Adrian spat, stepping in front of Evelyn, shielding her. "You broke your oath to the family."

Julian chuckled, a dry, raspy sound. "Family? You stole my life, Adrian! Father chose you because I was too 'unpredictable'! He tried to have me killed in that harbor crash, but I survived! I built an alliance with Victor Vance, I leaked the ledgers, and tonight, I take back the Blackwood name!"

"You didn't leak the real ledgers, Julian," Evelyn spoke up, her voice echoing clearly down the stone corridor.

Julian’s eyes flicked to her. "What are you talking about, girl?"

"The documents Noah stole from Adrian’s safe... I swapped them three days ago," Evelyn said, a lethal, triumphant smile breaking across her face. "I knew we had a leak when the Pier 4 numbers didn't match the internal bank transfers. So I replaced the offshore asset logs with the private banking transactions of Victor Vance’s money laundering network in New York."

Julian’s face drained of color. "You... what?"

"Right now," Evelyn continued calmly, "the federal prosecutors aren't raiding Blackwood hubs. They are executing thirty simultaneous arrest warrants against Victor Vance’s lieutenants across three states. You didn't ruin the Blackwood family, Julian. You just destroyed your only ally."

Julian let out a roar of absolute rage, raising his weapon—

BANG!

A single shot rang out.

Julian froze, his eyes wide with shock, looking down at his chest where a dark crimson spot was rapidly spreading. He collapsed onto his knees, dropping his gun, before falling face forward onto the cold floor.

Behind him, Noah stood with his weapon lowered, his hands shaking violently.

"He was going to kill you both," Noah whispered, his voice cracking. "You helped my sister, Mrs. Blackwood. I owed you a debt."

Noah slowly laid his gun on the ground, placing his hands behind his head, surrendering to the remaining Blackwood loyalists who came rushing up the grand staircase to secure the floor.

The battle for Blackwood Manor was over.
