Chapter 6 - THE FORTRESS OF ICE

The heavy oak door of the north wing room slammed shut, and Adrian dropped the massive iron deadbolt into place.
Outside the thick door, muffled gunshots, explosions, and screaming echoed down the stone hallway, but inside the servant’s room, the noise was reduced to a dull, thumping roar. The two-foot-thick granite walls built in the late 1800s stood solid, unyielding against the modern weaponry tearing the rest of the mansion apart.
Adrian collapsed against the door, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Blood was soaking through his black suit jacket near his left shoulder.
Evelyn didn't panic. She didn't scream.
She immediately rushed to the corner of the room, grabbing the clean linens she had prepped days ago, along with a bottle of high-proof whiskey she had kept hidden beneath her bed.
"Sit down," she commanded sharply, dropping to her knees beside him.
Adrian gritted his teeth, letting out a dark laugh as she cut his shirt open. "I put you in this freezing box to punish you... and now it’s the only thing keeping us alive."
"Irony has a strange sense of humor, Adrian," Evelyn said tightly, pouring the whiskey directly over his open shoulder wound.
Adrian gasped, his fingers digging into her knee, his knuckles turning white from the agonizing pain. "You didn't even flinch."
"I don't have time to flinch," she murmured, expertly using a clean cloth to apply pressure to the entry wound. "The bullet went clean through. You're bleeding fast, but you're not going to die today. Not in my room."
Adrian looked down at her. Her hands were stained with his blood, her face flushed from the heat of the small fire, her eyes locked onto his with an intensity that made his heart race faster than the blood loss.
"Why are you helping me?" Adrian asked softly, his voice strained. "If I die, your debt is paid. You could walk out of here when the smoke clears."
"If you die, Victor Vance and your brother will burn Providence to the ground, including my family," Evelyn said, tying the bandage tight. "Besides... I've grown somewhat attached to my husband. Even if he is an arrogant bastard."
Adrian let out a breathless chuckle, leaning his head back against the cold stone wall. "You're a terrifying woman, Evelyn Hart."
Suddenly, three heavy thuds rattled the iron door.
"Adrian!" a voice called out from the hallway. It was smooth, familiar, and dripping with arrogance. "Open the door, little brother. Let’s finish what father started three years ago!"
Adrian’s eyes snapped open. "Julian."
"He brought a breach team," Evelyn whispered, looking at the wood around the lock beginning to splinter under heavy blows. "That door won't hold for more than two minutes."
Adrian reached into his coat, pulling out his custom matte-black pistol and sliding it across the floor to Evelyn. "Can you shoot?"
May you like
Evelyn picked up the heavy weapon, checking the chamber with a practiced, terrifyingly calm motion. "My father was a bad accountant, Adrian. But he was an excellent marksman. He made sure I knew how to defend his assets."
"Good," Adrian rasped, pushing himself up against the wall, pulling a second weapon from his ankle holster. "Because when that door breaks, we don't give them a trial."
