CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Everyone Buried

The ballroom became so quiet that the dripping water from the overturned bucket sounded deafening.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

The cleaning woman looked older than Adrian remembered.

Silver strands mixed with her dark hair.

A thin scar crossed her temple.

Years of exhaustion had replaced the bright smile he once loved.

But those eyes...

He would recognize them anywhere.

"Elena..."

His voice shattered.

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at the hundreds of wealthy guests staring at her as though she were a ghost.

"I told Noah this room would never believe me."

Adrian crawled toward her before anyone could stop him.

He grabbed her shaking hands.

"They said you died."

"They showed me your body."

"They buried you."

Tears finally rolled down Elena's cheeks.

"They buried someone."

"But not me."

The guests exchanged horrified glances.

The hotel manager quietly locked the ballroom doors.

Nobody wanted to leave now.

Every phone continued recording.

Elena slowly sat in a nearby chair.

Her hands trembled as she began the story.

"The night of the hospital fire..."

"I never reached the parking lot."

She remembered everything.

A black SUV.

A cloth soaked with chemicals pressed over her face.

Darkness.

When she woke up...

She wasn't in a hospital.

She was in a private medical facility hidden outside the city.

Men in expensive suits watched from behind glass.

Doctors examined her every day.

One sentence echoed constantly.

"She knows too much."

Adrian froze.

His company's largest investor...

Victor Hale...

Had secretly funded illegal pharmaceutical experiments inside the hospital.

Elena had discovered patient records proving children were being used in unauthorized clinical trials.

She copied the files.

Before she could expose them...

The fire happened.

"It wasn't an accident," Elena whispered.

"It was evidence being erased."

Gasps swept through the ballroom.

Several executives quietly stepped backward.

One elderly guest nearly fainted.

Adrian felt physically sick.

"Why didn't you come home?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"They told me if I escaped..."

"They would kill you."

"And our baby."

Adrian looked slowly toward Noah.

His entire world collapsed.

"My son..."

Noah nodded once.

"I've always known who you were."

"You just didn't know I existed."

Suddenly...

A loud clap echoed from the back of the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

A man in an elegant tuxedo stepped from the shadows.

Perfect smile.

Perfect posture.

Cold eyes.

Victor Hale.

The billionaire investor.

Adrian's oldest business partner.

"I suppose..."

Victor said calmly,

"...the reunion is over."

Then twenty armed security guards entered through every exit.

The doors locked automatically.

Victor smiled wider.

"I've spent twenty-two years making sure Elena stayed dead."

May you like

"And tonight..."

"I'm finally going to finish the job."
