CHAPTER 8 — The Woman Behind Every Lie

The black jet never crashed.

It vanished.

Military radar lost it exactly forty-three seconds after it entered the storm.

News channels called it a mystery.

Federal investigators called it impossible.

Noah called it exactly what his mother had warned him about.

"They planned this years ago."

Three days later, Adrian received an encrypted flash drive with no return address.

Only one sentence was written on the envelope.

"Stop looking at the people you can see."

Inside was security footage from a private meeting held twenty-three years earlier.

The timestamp predated the hospital fire.

The image sharpened.

Victor Hale entered the room first.

Then Dr. Catherine Ross.

Both stood silently.

Neither sat down.

Instead, they waited.

A few seconds later...

An elderly woman walked into the room.

Elegant.

Perfect posture.

Silver hair tied neatly behind her head.

Every billionaire in Chicago knew her face.

Margaret Ashcroft.

Founder of the Ashcroft Medical Trust.

One of the country's most respected philanthropists.

The woman who had donated billions to children's hospitals around the world.

Adrian's hands began to shake.

"No..."

Margaret smiled in the recording.

"The children are not patients," she said calmly.

"They are investments."

The room fell silent.

Victor nodded obediently.

Catherine handed her a folder containing hundreds of names.

Margaret flipped through the pages without emotion.

"Dispose of the failures."

"Preserve the successful ones."

She signed the final page with a gold fountain pen.

Then she looked directly toward the security camera.

For a brief second...

It almost felt as though she could see Adrian watching decades later.

Elena whispered,

"She was the one everyone trusted."

The investigators immediately searched for Margaret.

Her mansion...

Empty.

Private offices...

Abandoned.

Bank accounts...

Closed.

She had disappeared six hours before Victor's arrest.

As the team stood in stunned silence...

Noah quietly opened the back of the flash drive.

Hidden inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.

May you like

Only five words.

"She's expecting you in Geneva."
