Chapter 7 - THE UNEXPECTED TWIST

The gala was a glittering success, but as the evening wound down, Emmett led me up to the private terrace overlooking the glowing skyline of Boston. The air was crisp and cold, but the heating lamps on the balcony kept us warm.
"You handled seeing him well tonight," Emmett said, handing me a glass of sparkling water.
"It felt strange," I admitted, looking out at the city. "For years, I thought getting revenge on him would make me feel victorious. But seeing him standing there with that tray... I didn't feel happy. I just felt clean. Like a heavy weight I'd been carrying since childhood finally dropped off my shoulders."
Emmett chuckled softly, leaning against the marble railing beside me. "That’s because you didn't conquer him out of malice, Jenna. You conquered him by simply being better at the game."
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, thick envelope made of heavy parchment paper, sealed with red wax.
"What's this?" I asked, looking at it with curiosity. "Another takeover target?"
"No," Emmett said, his face growing serious, his sharp eyes holding mine. "This is a disclosure document from the board of Stewart Global."
I took the envelope, breaking the wax seal and pulling out the single sheet of paper inside. As my eyes scanned the legal prose, my heart skipped a beat.
BOARD RESOLUTION: APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER By unanimous vote, the Board of Directors of Stewart Global hereby nominates Jenna Vance as incoming Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1st...
I looked up at Emmett, completely stunned. "CEO? Emmett... this is your position! You built Stewart Global!"
"I built it, yes," Emmett said, a gentle, genuine warmth filling his eyes. "But I've been looking for someone to lead it into the next decade—someone who doesn't just understand numbers, but understands people. Someone who knows what it’s like to sit at the very bottom and still have the vision to see the entire board."
"Emmett, I... I don't know what to say," I stammered, my heart pounding against my ribs.
"Say yes," he murmured, taking a step closer, his hand reaching out to touch mine. "Because there’s one more thing you need to know, Jenna."
"What?"
Emmett turned to look out at the city lights. "Six months ago, at your brother's wedding, I didn't just walk across that ballroom because I recognized your work on my speech."
I frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
"The speech you wrote for me at two in the morning... the one that saved my company?" Emmett looked back at me, a soft, enigmatic smile playing on his lips. "I didn't hire your agency by accident. Three years ago, when you were still writing that 'little blog' your family hated so much... I was one of your six hundred subscribers."
My jaw dropped. "What?!"
"I read your essays every night after twelve-hour corporate board meetings," Emmett confessed, his voice filled with a deep, long-standing respect. "You wrote about authenticity, about the quiet power of true merit over loud arrogance. Your words kept me sane when I was drowning in corporate politics. When I realized who was behind Apex Advisory's ghostwriting department, I didn't just want your talent, Jenna. I wanted the person who wrote those words to run my world."
The realization hit me like a wave.
May you like
It wasn't a coincidence. It wasn't luck.
Even when I thought I was invisible, sitting alone in my tiny apartment in my sweatpants, writing into the dark abyss of the internet... the right eyes were watching. The universe was quietly building a bridge to carry me out of the darkness and into the light.
