CHAPTER 1 – The Boy Who Refused to Walk Away

The rain had been falling for hours.

Lightning ripped across the dark sky as eleven-year-old Ethan Carter pedaled his rusty bicycle home through the nearly deserted streets of a quiet American town. His backpack was soaked. His sneakers squished with every step.

He was late.

Very late.

His mother would be worried.

Then he heard it.

Not thunder.

A weak voice.

"...Help..."

Ethan stopped immediately.

His heart pounded.

The sound came from a narrow ditch beside the old highway—a place everyone avoided after sunset.

He slowly walked closer.

There, half-hidden beneath broken branches and mud, lay a badly injured man.

His expensive suit was torn.

Blood covered one side of his face.

One arm was twisted unnaturally.

A black SUV nearby had slammed into a tree before rolling down the embankment.

Smoke still drifted from the engine.

The man's breathing was shallow.

Ethan looked around desperately.

No cars.

No people.

No signal on his old phone.

Most adults would have kept walking.

Not Ethan.

Without thinking twice, he crawled into the muddy ditch.

The injured stranger grabbed his sleeve with trembling fingers.

"Don't... let them... find me..."

Ethan frowned.

"Who?"

The man's terrified eyes darted toward the highway.

"They're... still... watching..."

Before Ethan could ask another question...

Two black SUVs slowly drove past the road above.

Their headlights swept across the trees like searchlights.

Ethan's stomach tightened.

Who were they looking for?

The vehicles paused.

One of them stopped.

A door opened.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the rain.

Someone was coming down toward the ditch.

Ethan's breathing became rapid.

The stranger whispered one final sentence before losing consciousness.

"If they find me... thousands... will die..."

The boy had no idea what those words meant.

But instinct told him one thing.

This wasn't just an accident.

This was something much bigger.

Thinking quickly, Ethan dragged piles of wet branches over the unconscious man just seconds before two enormous men wearing black jackets reached the edge of the ditch.

One of them shined a flashlight directly toward Ethan.

"What are you doing here, kid?"

Ethan forced himself to stay calm.

"My bike chain broke."

The man stared at him for several long seconds.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't a friendly smile.

"If you saw anyone tonight..."

"...forget it."

The two men walked away.

Only after their SUVs disappeared into the darkness did Ethan finally breathe again.

He looked back at the unconscious stranger.

Whoever this man was...

May you like

Someone powerful wanted him dead.

And Ethan had just become part of a deadly secret.
