CHAPTER 3 – The Stranger’s Real Name

The first gunshot shattered the window.
Ethan froze.
Daniel grabbed him and threw him behind an old wooden table just as bullets tore through the cabin walls.
“Stay down!” Daniel shouted.
The weak, injured stranger was suddenly not weak anymore.
With one hand, he kicked over a chair, blocked the doorway, and pulled a small emergency pistol from inside his torn jacket.
Ethan stared in shock.
This man wasn’t just some rich businessman.
He moved like a soldier.
Like someone trained to survive.
The masked men stormed inside.
Daniel fired once.
A lamp exploded above them, plunging the cabin into darkness.
“Run!” he yelled.
Ethan crawled toward the back door, clutching the watch tightly in his pocket.
Outside, rain hammered the trees.
The helicopter circled above.
Searchlights sliced through the forest.
Daniel stumbled behind him, bleeding badly.
They ran until Ethan’s lungs burned.
Then Daniel collapsed near the riverbank.
“Leave me,” he whispered.
Ethan shook his head. “No.”
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“Listen to me. My name isn’t Daniel.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“I’m Agent Nathan Hale. Federal witness protection. Those men work for a private military group. The chip in that watch proves they’re planning an attack.”
Ethan’s voice trembled.
“Why was my name in the photo?”
Nathan’s eyes filled with pain.
Before he could answer, headlights appeared through the trees.
The gunmen had found them again.
