CHAPTER 8 – The Trap Was Never About Nathan

The underground maintenance tunnels stretched for miles beneath the city.
Cold water dripped from rusted pipes.
Emergency lights flickered overhead.
Nathan led the way.
Clara followed close behind.
Ethan held tightly onto his father's hand.
For the first time in years...
They felt like a real family.
Then Nathan suddenly stopped.
"No..."
He stared at a blinking red light on Ethan's wrist.
The hospital bracelet.
Nathan ripped it off.
Too late.
A mechanical voice echoed through the tunnel.
"Target confirmed."
Every exit slammed shut with deafening force.
Steel doors sealed the tunnels.
The walls began vibrating.
Clara looked around in horror.
"It's a trap!"
Hidden speakers crackled to life.
Collins' voice echoed through the darkness.
"Congratulations."
"You brought the key exactly where we wanted."
The tunnel lights switched from white...
To blood red.
Then dozens of automated drones emerged from hidden compartments in the ceiling.
Tiny.
Silent.
Each carrying live explosives.
Nathan immediately understood.
"This was never about escaping."
"It was about isolating us."
The drones surrounded the family from every direction.
There was nowhere left to run.
Then Ethan remembered something.
The strange memory chip hidden inside the watch.
He had secretly kept it after all.
When everyone thought the watch had been lost in the river...
He had removed the chip minutes earlier and hidden it inside the sole of his shoe.
His hands trembled as he pulled it out.
On its side was one tiny button labeled:
EMERGENCY PROTOCOL: OMEGA
Nathan's eyes widened.
"No, Ethan!"
"If you press that..."
"...there's no turning back."
Ethan looked at the swarm of explosive drones.
At his terrified mother.
At the father he had only just found.
Then he pressed the button.
For three long seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then every screen across the tunnel lit up with a single message:
IDENTITY VERIFIED.
WELCOME, DIRECTOR CARTER.
Ethan froze.
"Director...?"
Nathan closed his eyes in disbelief.
"The system doesn't recognize me anymore..."
"It recognizes you."
At that exact moment, a hidden blast door slowly opened at the end of the tunnel.
Behind it stood a secret underground command center untouched for twenty years.
And inside...
An elderly man in a military uniform slowly stood up from the shadows.
He looked directly at Ethan...
Tears filled his eyes...
And he whispered,
May you like
"Welcome home, grandson."
