Chapter 5 – The Suitcase Rex Refused to Leave

The convoy arrived at the abandoned warehouse just before midnight.
Rain hammered the rusted metal roof while flashing police lights painted the walls in blue and red.
Daniel pushed the heavy doors open.
His heart nearly stopped.
The kidnapper hadn't lied.
Dozens of identical black suitcases were arranged in perfect rows across the enormous warehouse floor.
Every suitcase looked exactly the same.
No labels.
No markings.
No clues.
Only silence.
The countdown on Daniel's phone read:
01:42:18
Less than two hours remained.
"If we open the wrong one..." an officer whispered.
Daniel remembered the message.
Trust the dog.
He unclipped Rex's leash.
The German Shepherd slowly walked between the endless rows of luggage.
Every officer held their breath.
Rex ignored one suitcase.
Then another.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Forty.
Finally...
He stopped in front of one near the back wall.
He sniffed carefully.
Sat down.
Then looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
"This is it."
Bomb technicians carefully scanned the suitcase.
No explosives.
Daniel slowly reached for the zipper.
His hands shook.
The lock clicked open.
Inside...
There was no child.
Instead...
A laptop.
A satellite phone.
And dozens of folders filled with photographs.
Daniel opened the first folder.
Every photo showed children reported missing over the past five years.
Some had already been rescued.
Many had never been found.
Then he noticed something even more disturbing.
Each photograph had handwritten notes beside it.
Dates.
Locations.
Police response times.
Patrol routes.
Someone had documented every police operation in incredible detail.
Only an insider could have gathered this information.
One officer quietly said,
"This isn't just a kidnapper..."
"It's an entire network."
Just then...
The laptop powered on by itself.
A live video appeared.
The hooded man smiled.
"You finally found my office."
"But you're still looking in the wrong direction."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The stranger leaned closer to the camera.
"I never asked you to trust the police."
"I told you..."
"...trust the dog."
The screen suddenly went black again.
Rex immediately growled.
Not at the laptop.
May you like
Not at the suitcase.
At someone standing behind Daniel.
