CHAPTER 3: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Emma stared at the photo on her phone.
Her hands went cold.
The man on the floor looked badly injured, but what terrified her most was not the blood.
It was his face.
She knew him.
His name was Daniel Reed.
Five years ago, Daniel had been Emma’s partner.
And five years ago…
he had vanished during an undercover operation everyone believed had ended in his death.
Emma stepped backward, barely able to breathe.
“Noah,” she whispered, “is your father’s name Daniel?”
The little boy’s eyes filled with tears.
“You know Daddy?”
Before Emma could answer, the lights in the station shut off completely.
A loud explosion shook the front entrance.
Officers shouted.
Glass shattered.
Then a voice came through the station speaker system.
“Detective Carter… bring the child outside.”
Emma held Noah tighter.
Captain Harris grabbed her arm.
“Emma, what is going on?”
She looked at the silver key in her palm.
“I think Daniel never died.”
At that moment, Noah pointed toward the evidence room.
“Daddy said the door with number 17 has the truth.”
Emma ran.
Inside the evidence room, locker 17 stood at the very back.
The key fit perfectly.
When she opened it, there was no money.
No weapon.
Only a small hard drive…
and a photo of Emma from five years ago.
On the back, Daniel had written:
“I trusted the wrong people. Don’t trust Harris.”
Emma slowly turned around.
May you like
Captain Harris was standing in the doorway.
With a gun in his hand.
