CHAPTER 8: The Truth Victor Never Wanted Revealed

The warehouse fell silent.

Victor Langford stopped only a few feet away.

His expression was calm.

Almost fatherly.

"I've spent thirty years searching for you," he said.

Emma pointed her gun directly at his chest.

"Don't call me your daughter."

Victor smiled.

"You have your mother's stubbornness."

Daniel stepped between them.

"If you move one more step, I'll shoot."

Victor didn't even glance at him.

Instead, his eyes rested on Noah.

"My grandson."

Noah hid behind Emma.

"I don't know you."

A flicker of pain crossed Victor's face—but it vanished just as quickly.

"You've been lied to your entire life," Victor said quietly.

Emma laughed bitterly.

"By who? The murderer standing in front of me?"

Victor slowly removed a small remote control from his pocket.

"I never wanted any of this."

He pressed a button.

Across the warehouse walls, massive hidden screens suddenly came to life.

Old surveillance footage filled every monitor.

Emma watched in horror.

The videos showed corrupt senators...

Police chiefs...

Judges...

Corporate CEOs...

All secretly meeting together.

Then one final recording appeared.

Victor himself sat at the head of a table.

But instead of giving orders...

He was surrounded.

Threatened.

One senator slammed a folder onto the table.

"You either cooperate..."

"...or your wife and daughter die tonight."

Victor's younger self stood up, shouting.

"No!"

The screen went black.

Emma's hands began to shake.

Victor looked at her with exhausted eyes.

"I became their monster..."

"...because they already had you."

Before Emma could respond, Samuel suddenly yelled,

"Get down!"

A deafening gunshot echoed through the warehouse.

Victor staggered backward.

A crimson stain spread across his white shirt.

The bullet hadn't come from Emma.

It came from the catwalk high above.

A sniper.

Victor collapsed to his knees.

With his last strength, he shoved the second hard drive into Emma's hands.

His voice was barely audible.

"They're... still inside... the government..."

"Trust..."

He coughed blood.

"...no one..."

Another gunshot rang out.

The warehouse lights exploded into darkness.

Smoke grenades rolled across the floor.

Masked soldiers flooded the building from every entrance.

Their uniforms carried no police insignia.

No military patches.

Only one symbol.

A black phoenix.

Samuel's face turned white.

"Oh God..."

Emma grabbed Noah with one arm and Daniel with the other.

"What is it?"

Samuel whispered the words that made everyone's blood run cold.

"The Phoenix Circle..."

"They're the people even Victor Langford feared."

And through the thick smoke, a distorted voice echoed from unseen speakers:

"Mission update..."

"Primary target Victor Langford eliminated."

"Secondary targets..."

"Emma Carter and Child 017..."

"...capture alive."
