Chapter 1

“If you sign those papers, you'll be signing your son away too.”

The stranger whispered those words as the bus slowed to a stop at a toll booth on the highway to Veracruz.

For nearly three hours, the tip of his shoe had brushed against Valeria Cruz's ankle. She had been seconds away from confronting him when he walked past her seat, slipped a gray handkerchief into her hand, and stepped off the bus without looking back.

“Pretend you're feeling sick,” he added quietly. “Don't sign anything at the Alcázar house.”

Valeria froze.

Beside her, her nine-year-old son, Diego, slept peacefully with his head resting on her shoulder.

Inside the folded handkerchief was a note written in blue ink.

"Your husband didn't die by accident."

Ever since Sebastián Alcázar had died fourteen months earlier when his pickup truck plunged into a ravine, Valeria's life had become an endless cycle of paperwork, debts, and unanswered questions.

She worked as an accountant for a building materials company in Mexico City and had learned not to trust people easily.

Even so...

This warning sounded unbelievable.

The night before, her mother-in-law, Teresa, had called in tears.

She claimed that Don Octavio—Sebastián's father—was dying in San Isidro del Mar and desperately wanted to say goodbye to his only grandson.

Without suspecting a thing, Valeria had taken the first available bus.

She never imagined someone had been watching every step of her journey.

When she returned to her seat, she noticed a man in a beige shirt talking quietly on his phone two rows ahead.

“Yes, Mr. Mauricio... both of them are on their way,” he murmured.

Mauricio was Sebastián's younger brother.

When the bus arrived at the terminal, Mauricio was already waiting beside a black SUV.

He hugged Diego, loaded their luggage, and smiled like the caring brother-in-law he had always pretended to be.

“Dad's spirits lifted the moment he heard you were coming.

Honestly, seeing Diego gave him a reason to keep fighting.”

But the moment they entered the old family home, Valeria discovered the first lie.

Don Octavio wasn't dying.

He looked pale and weak, yes...

But he was sitting comfortably in the living room, drinking coffee while chatting with a dozen relatives.

Every pair of eyes turned toward Diego.

There was something unsettling in the way they looked at him.

“He's the heir to the Alcázar name,” one of Sebastián's uncles declared.

“Everything Sebastián left behind should remain with the Alcázar family.”

Throughout dinner, the conversation revolved around “protecting the boy,” how a young widow could always remarry, and why the family business should never end up in outsiders' hands.

Valeria remained silent while Mauricio repeatedly insisted that they would hold “nothing more than an administrative meeting” the following morning.

That night, she overheard voices behind the family's prayer room.

“She has to sign,” Mauricio said.

“Without her signature, we can't move the 48% ownership stake.”

“I won't let you use Diego,” Don Octavio replied firmly.

Teresa burst into tears.

“We've spent twenty-three years hiding what really happened on that highway.

This family won't survive another tragedy.”

Mauricio slammed his fist onto the table.

“Valeria is the key.

And the boy is the only piece we're still missing.”

The next morning, the entire family gathered around the dining room table.

Mauricio placed a Shared Administration Agreement in front of Valeria and handed her a pen.

“Sign it, sister-in-law.

It's for Diego's own good.”

Before she could answer, Don Octavio slowly stood up, his hands trembling.

He opened a large yellow envelope.

Inside was Sebastián's original will.

It clearly stated that Valeria was the sole legal administrator of Sebastián's shares until Diego turned eighteen.

Mauricio's smile vanished.

He leaned closer and whispered:

“A piece of paper won't protect either of you forever.”

At that exact moment...

Valeria's phone vibrated.

May you like

It was a message from the stranger on the bus.

"Get your son out of that house before nightfall. Sebastián left behind evidence... and Mauricio already knows you're going to find it."
