Chapter 3 - THE WHISPER IN THE ARCHIVESFootsteps thundered behind them like a stampede of wild bulls.

“This way, Diego! Faster!” Valeria gasped, her lungs burning as she dragged her son up the grand curved staircase. The historic Alcázar mansion was a labyrinth of echoing corridors, dark wood panels, and portraits of stern ancestors whose painted eyes seemed to judge them from the walls.
They reached the second-floor landing. To the left lay the family bedrooms; to the right, a narrow, dust-laden corridor that led to Don Octavio’s private study—a restricted room where Sebastián used to spend hours working on the family shipping manifests before his untimely death.
“Go, Diego! Under the desk, right now!” Valeria commanded, shoving open the heavy oak door of the study.
Diego scrambled across the Persian rug and dove beneath the massive, claw-footed mahogany desk, pulling the heavy velvet drapes down to conceal himself completely.
Valeria locked the study door from the inside with a heavy iron skeleton key, her hands shaking violently. She turned around to survey the room. Dust motes danced in the pale shafts of sunlight piercing through the heavy velvet curtains. The air smelled of old paper, leather, and pipe tobacco.
“Sebastián left behind evidence... and Mauricio already knows you're going to find it.”
The stranger’s words echoed in her mind. But where would Sebastián hide something explosive enough to bring down the Alcázar empire?
She started tearing through the room. She yanked open desk drawers—pens, old tax forms, blank stationery. Nothing. She checked behind the rows of leather-bound books on the mahogany shelves. Nothing.
Outside in the hallway, a heavy shoulder slammed against the study door.
BANG!
The wood groaned, and the iron lock rattled violently in its frame.
“Valeria! Open this door right now, or we kick it down!” Mauricio’s voice bellowed from the other side, laced with venom and panic.
BANG!
A second, harder blow hit the door. The frame splintered slightly near the latch. They only had minutes—maybe seconds—before the door gave way.
Valeria frantically scanned the room. Her eyes landed on an old, ornate globe standing in the corner. She rushed over, spun it wildly, and noticed a hidden compartment at the base. She pried it open with her fingernails.
Inside wasn't a paper document. It was a small, high-capacity USB flash drive, labeled with a single word in Sebastián's handwriting: TRUTH.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the hallway. Mauricio and his men had brought a heavy iron crowbar to the door. The lock shattered with a deafening snap, and the door flew wide open.
Mauricio stepped into the study, panting, a dark, triumphant grin plastered across his face. Two large, menacing security guards flanked him, their knuckles bruised and ready for violence.
“Game over, sweet sister-in-law,” Mauricio sneered, taking a slow step forward. “Did you really think you could outsmart us in our own house?”
Valeria gripped the USB drive tightly in her pocket, her heart pounding against her ribs. She stepped backward, positioning herself instinctively in front of the heavy velvet desk where little Diego was hidden in absolute silence.
“You didn't just steal the company shares, Mauricio,” Valeria said, her voice ringing out steady and fearless in the quiet room. “You killed your own brother.”
May you like
Mauricio stopped dead in his tracks. The smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a dark, murderous shadow.
“You talk too much, Valeria,” Mauricio whispered, signaling to the guards. “And curiosity is a fatal flaw in this family. Grab her. And tear this room apart until you find what she’s hiding.”
