Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE OF THE ALCÁZAR ESTATEFor three agonizing seconds, no one moved. The room was suspended in a vacuum of sheer terror and shock.

Then, Mauricio snapped.

The facade of the polished, untouchable corporate executive completely shattered. His eyes bulged with murderous frenzy, and he lunged toward the table, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight.

“Delete it! Delete it right now, or I swear to God I’ll kill every single one of you!” Mauricio shrieked, charging directly at Valeria.

The two security guards, recovering from their momentary paralysis, moved to block the door and assist Mauricio.

“Dad, get out!” Valeria screamed, pushing Don Octavio behind a bookshelf as Mauricio closed the distance with terrifying speed.

Before Mauricio could reach her, the heavy velvet drapes beneath the mahogany desk suddenly parted.

Nine-year-old Diego scrambled out, holding a heavy metal fire extinguisher he had found stashed in the study’s emergency cabinet. With all the adrenaline and strength his little body could muster, the boy swung the heavy metal cylinder sideways, smashing it directly into Mauricio’s knees.

CRACK!

Mauricio let out a blood-curdling scream of agony as his knee buckled backward. He collapsed heavily onto the Persian rug, clutching his shattered leg and writhing in pain.

“Nobody hurts my mom!” Diego yelled, his voice cracking with fierce determination.

Valeria scooped her son up in one arm, while using her free hand to grab the Bluetooth speaker and the USB drive. “Don't move!” she yelled at the two security guards, who hesitated, looking down at their writhing employer and then at the open door.

Sirens wailed in the distance.

At first, it sounded like a faint, distant hum on the coastal highway. But within seconds, the wail grew deafeningly loud. Flashing red and blue lights painted the estate's high archway windows in a chaotic, strobe-like dance.

The guards froze. One of them slowly dropped his hands.

“Federal police! Don't move! Drop your weapons!” a voice boomed from the hallway, amplified through a megaphone.

Heavy, tactical boots thundered up the staircase. Within moments, heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the study, their assault rifles raised, securing every corner of the room.

Leading the tactical unit was a tall, broad-shouldered man in plainclothes. He stepped into the room, lowering his badge. His eyes locked onto Valeria.

It was the stranger from the bus.

He wore the exact same beige shirt, but now, pinned to his belt was the badge of a high-ranking Federal Anticorruption Investigator.

“Agent Morales, Federal Police,” the man said, offering Valeria a reassuring, warm nod. “Sorry it took me three hours on that bus to brief you, Mrs. Cruz. But we needed Mauricio to panic, make a move, and expose his accomplices in person.”

Valeria exhaled a breath she felt like she had been holding for fourteen months. She clutched Diego tightly to her chest, whispering words of praise and love into his hair as federal agents slapped steel handcuffs onto Mauricio and the two security guards.

As Mauricio was dragged past them across the floor, his face bruised, tear-stained, and twisted with impotent rage, he glared at Valeria with pure venom.

“You think this is over?” Mauricio hissed through clenched teeth as officers hauled him away. “The board... the offshore accounts... you'll never trace them all! The Alcázar empire will burn before you ever touch a dime!”

May you like

Valeria didn't even flinch. She looked down at him with absolute pity and contempt.

“An empire built on blood and lies was never yours to keep, Mauricio,” Valeria replied coldly.
