CHAPTER 1 – The Dog That Wouldn't Run

he explosion shook the entire industrial district.
Within seconds, flames swallowed the old warehouse while thick black smoke turned daylight into darkness. Sirens screamed through the streets as firefighters rushed toward the inferno, expecting to find nothing but rubble.
Everyone was ordered to stay back.
Everyone...
Except one German Shepherd.
The military rescue dog burst through the safety barrier before anyone could stop him. Ignoring the deafening explosions, he sprinted across the broken concrete as if he already knew someone was still alive.
Captain Ryan yelled after him.
"Shadow! Come back!"
But the dog never looked back.
Hidden beneath a collapsed steel beam, a young man struggled to breathe. Dust filled his lungs. Blood covered one side of his face. Every attempt to move only buried him deeper beneath the debris.
He knew no one could possibly find him.
Then...
A familiar bark echoed through the smoke.
Shadow.
The massive dog appeared out of nowhere, his paws digging frantically through shattered bricks. He grabbed the man's torn jacket with his teeth and refused to let go.
The survivor tried to smile despite the unbearable pain.
"You actually found me..."
The dog whimpered softly and licked the man's face, refusing to leave even as burning beams crashed only a few feet away.
Outside, firefighters finally noticed Shadow's desperate barking.
"He found someone!"
The rescue team rushed toward the location.
But just as they reached the victim...
Another explosion ripped through the warehouse.
The ceiling collapsed.
Everything disappeared beneath a mountain of concrete.
When the smoke cleared...
Shadow was still standing.
Covered in dust.
Bleeding from one paw.
Still refusing to move.
Even the veteran firefighters froze.
The dog wasn't protecting the injured man anymore.
He was guarding...
Something hidden beneath the rubble.
