CHAPTER 2 – The Box Beneath the Ashes

For nearly twenty minutes, Shadow growled at anyone who came too close.
It wasn't aggression.
It was desperation.
Captain Ryan had worked with rescue dogs for nearly fifteen years, and he had never seen behavior like this.
"Dig where he's standing," Ryan ordered.
Heavy machinery carefully lifted the collapsed concrete while Shadow watched every movement without blinking.
Piece by piece...
A small metal box slowly emerged from beneath the debris.
It wasn't large.
It wasn't valuable-looking.
But the moment the injured survivor saw it, tears filled his eyes.
"No..."
He whispered.
"They found it..."
Everyone assumed it contained money, jewelry, or confidential company documents.
Ryan carefully opened the rusted lock.
Inside was no cash.
No weapons.
No classified files.
Only dozens of old photographs.
A tiny pair of baby shoes.
A faded hospital bracelet.
And a handwritten letter addressed to someone named...
Emma.
The injured man suddenly began crying uncontrollably.
"Please... don't let my daughter think I abandoned her again."
The firefighters stared at him in silence.
"Daughter?" Ryan asked.
The survivor slowly nodded.
"She thinks I died five years ago."
No one understood.
If he had been alive all this time...
Why had his own child believed he was dead?
Before anyone could ask another question...
Police vehicles surrounded the scene.
An elderly detective stepped out, looked at the survivor...
Then turned pale.
He whispered only four words.
"We've been lied to."
Those words changed everything.
May you like
Because the man trapped beneath the warehouse...
Wasn't supposed to exist.
