CHAPTER 3 – The Daughter Who Was Never Told the Truth

Detective Harris stared at the wounded man like he had seen a ghost.
"Michael Reed died five years ago," he said slowly. "I signed the report myself."
The survivor lifted his bloody face.
"Then you signed a lie."
Captain Ryan felt the entire rescue scene turn cold.
Michael Reed.
That name meant something.
Five years ago, Michael had been a decorated bomb-disposal soldier. A hero. A husband. A father. Then one night, his car was found burned at the bottom of a ravine.
No body.
Only ashes.
His wife, Claire, buried an empty coffin and told their daughter Emma that Daddy had gone to heaven.
But Michael was alive.
And Shadow, the military dog everyone thought had retired from grief, had known it the moment he smelled him under the rubble.
"Where is my daughter?" Michael asked, voice breaking.
Detective Harris looked away.
"She's with your wife."
Michael's eyes filled with fear.
"Claire isn't my wife anymore."
The detective froze.
Michael reached for the metal box with shaking fingers and pulled out one photograph.
It showed Claire standing beside a man in a dark suit.
Behind them was the same warehouse.
