CHAPTER 7 – The Man in the Hospital Bed Wasn't Michael

Chaos erupted as doctors, nurses, and federal agents flooded the darkened hallway.
Michael Reed's hospital room was empty.
His heart monitor still beeped.
The IV bag still swayed gently.
But the patient had vanished.
Captain Ryan dropped to one knee.
"Shadow."
The German Shepherd lowered his nose to the floor, sniffing rapidly before sprinting toward the emergency stairwell.
The agents followed.
Three flights down, they found a nurse unconscious beside an open service elevator.
Her uniform had been stolen.
Inside the elevator lay a discarded oxygen mask... and a fake hospital wristband.
Detective Harris picked it up.
The name printed on it wasn't Michael Reed.
It read:
Daniel Vaughn.
Richard Vaughn's younger brother.
Everyone froze.
"What does this mean?" Ryan asked.
Harris stared at the bracelet, his face turning pale.
"It means the man in that hospital bed may never have been Michael."
Silence filled the hallway.
Then Shadow barked once—loud and sharp.
The dog ran toward the underground parking garage.
There, a black SUV sped toward the exit.
Without hesitation, Shadow leaped in front of it.
The driver slammed on the brakes.
Federal agents surrounded the vehicle with weapons drawn.
The rear door slowly opened.
Inside sat Richard Vaughn...
Smiling.
"You still don't understand," he said calmly.
"The wrong Reed brother survived."
Before anyone could react, another voice echoed from behind them.
"He's telling the truth."
Everyone turned.
Standing in the shadows was the wounded man they had rescued.
He looked exactly like Michael.
But the expression on his face had changed completely.
"My real name..."
May you like
He whispered.
"...is Matthew Reed."
