Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room RevelationThe mention of the hospital wasn't just a blow; it was a detonation.

Adrien turned to look at Maya, his expression turning from protective fury to lethal ice. "What did you say about the hospital, Maya?"

Before Maya could answer, a loud chime echoed from the main entrance hall. A phalanx of federal agents in dark suits pushed past the bewildered guests, led by a stern-faced woman holding an open federal warrant.

"Arthur Sinclair and Vanessa Sinclair?" the lead agent announced, holding up the badge. "You're under arrest for securities fraud, wire fraud, and tampering with federally subsidized medical infrastructure."

Chaos erupted. Photographers swarmed forward, cameras clicking furiously as federal agents placed handcuffs on a sputtering, screaming Arthur Sinclair and a sobbing, mascara-streaked Vanessa. As they were dragged out past the crystal chandeliers and white rose arches, Vanessa turned her head, fixing Maya with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think you won?" Vanessa shrieked as security bundled her toward the doors. "You're still a nobody! A scrubber of floors! He used you as a prop, you stupid little trash!"

The doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice.

The silence that returned to the grand hallway felt heavy, suffocating, and absolute. The guests began to murmur nervously, inching toward the exits, realizing they were witnessing the violent dismantling of a multi-billion-dollar empire in real-time. Within twenty minutes, the estate had emptied of society elites, leaving only the security detail, Elena, Adrien, and Maya.

Adrien turned to Maya, ignoring the mess around them. "Explain the hospital part. Now."

Maya took a slow, deep breath. She looked down at the discarded white apron on the marble floor. "Three weeks ago, right before I was assigned to the private wing... my mother’s doctor informed me that an anonymous donor had suddenly paid off her entire medical debt, but with one condition: that I sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the Whitmore family’s private archives."

She looked up, meeting Adrien’s piercing gaze. "I didn't sign it. Instead, I found out who the anonymous donor was. It wasn't you, Adrien. It was Vanessa. She knew who I was. She knew we grew up together in the same impoverished district in Bellweather twenty-four years ago. She brought me into this house as a maid not by coincidence, but as a trap. She wanted to break me slowly, make me quit, or use me as leverage when her corporate takeover was ready to launch."

Adrien’s hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles turned white. "And you didn't tell me?"

May you like

"How could I?" Maya’s voice cracked slightly, the emotional weight of the past month finally breaking through her stoic defense. "You were engaged to a monster, wrapped up in a billion-dollar merger, and surrounded by sharks. I was just a ghost from your past. I didn't want to be your weakness."

"You were never a weakness, Maya," Adrien said, his voice dropping to a fierce, quiet intensity as he stepped closer. "You were the only real thing in my life since the day we sat behind that library."
