Chapter 6 - Ashes of the PastForty-eight hours later, the headlines shook the financial world to its core.

SINCLAIR EMPIRE COLLAPSES: FRAUD SCANDAL ROCKS WALL STREET. WHITMORE HOLDINGS PURGES BOARD IN DRAMATIC MIDNIGHT COUP. MYSTERY MAID EXPOSED AS BILLIONAIRE’S CHILDHOOD SAVIOR.

The media circus outside the Whitmore estate was relentless. Satellite trucks lined the private drive, reporters camped out by the security gates, and paparazzi used long-lens cameras hoping to snap a photo of the "Cinderella maid" who had single-handedly brought down a corporate dynasty.

Inside the mansion’s vast, sunlit library, however, there was absolute quiet.

Maya stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the manicured lawns. She was wearing her own clothes now—a simple dark blue sweater and jeans—no apron, no name tag, no polished silver tray in her hands.

The door opened softly, and Elena walked in carrying two cups of black coffee. She set one down on the mahogany desk before walking over to stand beside Maya.

"The press corps is thinning out," Elena said, taking a sip. "They realized we locked the gates and cut the Wi-Fi."

"Thank you, Elena," Maya said softly. "For everything. For protecting me, for believing in me, and for not telling Adrien sooner."

Elena chuckled, a warm, rich sound. "Adrien needed to grow a spine before he could handle the truth about his life. And you needed to realize that your worth isn't tied to a uniform, Maya." She turned, placing a hand on Maya’s shoulder. "My nephew has been pacing outside my office for an hour like a caged panther. I think you should let him in."

Before Maya could reply, the library door pushed open wide.

Adrien walked in. He looked exhausted—his shirt collar unbuttoned, his tie gone, dark circles under his eyes—but when he saw Maya standing by the window, his expression softened instantly.

"Elena," Adrien said without breaking eye contact with Maya. "Give us a moment."

"Take an hour," Elena smiled, turning and walking out of the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind her.

Adrien walked across the room, stopping a few feet away from Maya. The space between them crackled with unsaid words, old memories, and the heavy debris of a shattered past.

"The board accepted my restructuring plan this morning," Adrien said quietly. "We're liquidating the assets we acquired from Sinclair, restructuring our R&D division, and setting up a permanent trust for underfunded medical research—starting with full coverage for your mother."

Maya’s breath hitched. She looked away, blinking back sudden, hot tears. "Adrien, you didn't have to—"

"Stop," he interrupted, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from him. He reached out, gently taking her hand. His fingers were warm, rough with calluses from a life of working just as hard as she had, despite the billions in his bank account. "You spent twenty-four years saving everyone else, Maya. Let someone take care of you for once."
