Chapter 4 - The Siege at Dawn

Andrew’s hand gripped the edge of the intercom console so tightly his knuckles turned white.
In the reflection of the glass screen, he could see the danger clearly. Robert Sterling wasn't just a corporate lawyer; he was the architect behind every aggressive, borderline-illegal acquisition Andrew’s firm had executed over the past decade. If Sterling was here with federal marshals and Victor Vance, it meant the trap had already sprung from both sides.
They didn't just want the flash drive containing the company's financial secrets. They wanted Elizabeth silenced permanently, and they were using Andrew's own penthouse as the execution ground.
"You have no jurisdiction here without a federal warrant, Sterling," Andrew said into the intercom, his voice dropping into its coldest, most lethal executive tone. "Get off my floor before I have security throw you down the service stairs."
Sterling’s smooth, perfectly manicured face appeared on the screen, a thin, patronizing smile playing across his lips.
"Andrew, my dear friend, let's not play corporate theater," Sterling replied smoothly. "We checked your flight logs. We know you landed early. More importantly, our internal monitoring detected an encrypted data transfer originating from this IP address thirty minutes ago. Dr. Vance has stolen proprietary corporate assets. Under the Patriot Act provisions regarding industrial espionage and national infrastructure security, federal marshals have emergency authorization to secure the premises."
"It's a private residence!"
"It's a crime scene," Victor Vance interrupted, his voice cutting in over the audio feed with bitter hatred. "Open the damn door, James! Your fancy lawyers can't save you from what's coming. That woman ruined my career, she destroyed my family, and now she’s going to rot in a federal penitentiary—starting with the evidence she handed you ten minutes ago!"
Andrew turned his head sharply. Down the hallway, near the kitchen entrance, Elizabeth stood frozen. Her face had gone completely pale. She had heard every word through the open architectural layout of the loft.
She hadn't just brought the flash drive; she had walked directly into a tracking beacon. Sterling and Victor had known she would come here. They had used Alex’s trauma, her desire for vengeance, and Andrew’s absence as a multi-layered snare to trap them both in one stroke.
"Andrew," Elizabeth whispered, stepping out of the kitchen with her hands trembling slightly. "They tracked the decryption key. I didn't think... I didn't think Sterling had backdoor access to the transit logs."
"It doesn't matter," Andrew said quickly, walking back toward her with fierce determination. He reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her toward the secure panic room hidden behind the library bookshelves. "Get Alex. Now."
"Mr. James, you can't fight federal marshals," she protested, her eyes wide with panic not for herself, but for the boy. "If they enter with a warrant—"
"They don't have a warrant yet, Elizabeth! Sterling is using an emergency override clause that expires in exactly four minutes," Andrew snapped, punching the digital code into the mahogany bookshelf panel. The heavy wood swung inward with a pneumatic hiss, revealing a high-tech secure vault equipped with independent communications, emergency supplies, and a secondary private freight elevator that bypassed the main building lobby entirely.
"Daddy?"

Alex stood at the end of the hallway, holding a wooden spoon, his eyes wide with terror as he watched the commotion. The sudden shouting had broken the fragile peace they had built over the pancakes.
Before Andrew could reach him, the heavy front mahogany door of the penthouse exploded inward with a deafening crash.
