Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

The kitchen disposal hummed to a silent stop.

The heavy silence that followed was suffocating. The tactical officers looked between Robert Sterling and Andrew James, their weapons lowering by a fraction of an inch as the legal ambiguity of the situation shifted beneath their feet. Without the physical drive, the emergency raid lacked immediate evidentiary backing, turning a high-stakes federal bust into an illegal trespass by private security backed by rogue corporate allies.

Sterling’s face twitched, his immaculate veneer completely cracked. He pointed a trembling finger at Andrew. "You're a ruined man, James. The board will vote you out by noon. Your stock options will be frozen, your assets seized, and you'll be defending yourself against federal conspiracy charges until you're bankrupt."

"Let them try," Andrew said coldly, stepping closer until he was standing inches from Sterling’s face. "And if you or this pathetic excuse for a man," Andrew flicked a glance toward Victor Vance, "ever come near my son again, I won't use the courts. I'll handle you myself."

Sterling swallowed hard, taking a slow step backward. He looked at the lead tactical officer. "Fall back. We're done here for today."

As the armed men backed out through the shattered doorway, Victor Vance glared at Elizabeth with pure venom. "This isn't over, Elizabeth. You haven't won anything."

"Get out, Victor," Elizabeth said quietly.

When the front door finally closed behind them, the penthouse felt impossibly vast, cold, and empty.

Andrew turned around slowly. The drywall near the entrance was cracked, glass littered the marble floor, and the morning light poured through the broken doorway.

He walked back toward the kitchen, his heart hammering against his ribs. He expected to find Alex curled in a corner, crying or completely shut down.

Instead, he found the boy standing by the kitchen island, holding the wooden spoon he had dropped earlier.

Elizabeth was kneeling beside him, her hands gently resting on his shoulders.

As Andrew walked into the room, Alex raised his head. His eyes weren't filled with the blank terror of the morning. They were clear, bright, and fixed entirely on his father.

"Daddy," Alex said, his voice small, clear, and steady.

Andrew stopped dead in his tracks. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't move.

"Are the bad men gone?" Alex asked.

The sentence wasn't just a word. It was a complete, coherent, perfectly articulated thought.

Andrew fell to his knees on the flour-dusted floor, pulling his son into his arms so hard that the boy let out a soft, surprised gasp. He buried his face in Alex’s dark curls, tears finally breaking free and streaming down his cheeks, washing away months of guilt, ambition, and unbearable grief.

"They're gone, buddy," Andrew choked out, his voice breaking completely. "They're gone, and they're never coming back. I promise."

Elizabeth sat beside them on the floor, watching father and son embrace. A quiet, profound peace settled across her features, erasing years of bitterness and pain. She reached out and placed her hand gently over Andrew’s shoulder.
