Chapter 8 - The Beginning

Six months later, the sun rose over a quiet farmhouse in upstate New York, far away from the concrete canyons and glass towers of Manhattan.
The air smelled of damp earth, pine trees, and woodsmoke.
A large golden retriever bounded across the wide green lawn, chasing a red rubber ball thrown by a little boy in dinosaur pajamas. Alex laughed as the dog retrieved the ball, running back with it clamped proudly in its jaws.
On the wide wooden porch of the farmhouse, Andrew sat in a rocking chair with a cup of black coffee in his hand, watching the sunrise paint the Catskill mountains in shades of amber and rose.
Footsteps sounded softly behind him, and a familiar gray sweater settled over his shoulders as Elizabeth leaned down to kiss the top of his head before sitting in the rocking chair beside him.
"You know," Andrew said, turning to look at her with a warm smile, "the financial press still writes articles about my 'mysterious disappearance' from Wall Street."
"Let them wonder," Elizabeth replied, taking a sip of her coffee and looking out at the lawn where Alex was now trying to teach the dog how to sit. "They think you lost everything."
"They're right," Andrew murmured, reaching over to take her hand. "I lost a billion-dollar portfolio, a penthouse full of empty rooms, and a life built on noise and concrete."

He squeezed her hand gently, watching his son chase the dog through the morning dew.
"And for the first time in my life... I finally won."
