Chapter 5 - The Breach

Splintered wood and reinforced brass flew across the marble entryway as three heavily armored men in tactical gear swarmed into the foyer, automatic weapons raised and laser sights painting the walls in red.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!"
Robert Sterling stepped through the wreckage behind them, straightening his silk tie with an air of absolute, untouchable triumph. Behind Sterling strode Victor Vance, his eyes wild with vindictive fury as he scanned the long hallway.
"Clear!" shouted the lead tactical officer, his boots echoing sharply against the marble floor.
Andrew stood in the doorway of the library, shielding Elizabeth and Alex behind his body. His CEO facade had vanished, replaced by the raw, primal fury of a father protecting his cub.
"You're trespassing, Sterling," Andrew growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed violence. "Put your weapons down before I ruin every single one of you legally, financially, and personally before the stock market opens at nine."
Sterling smiled smoothly, stepping over a piece of broken crown molding. "Save the boardroom bravado, Andrew. You're finished. You harbored a fugitive, you accepted stolen corporate data, and you’re currently standing in the middle of a federal investigation for corporate conspiracy. The board has already been notified of your 'incapacitation' due to emotional distress."
"You staged this," Elizabeth said, stepping out from behind Andrew, her voice steady despite the rifle barrels pointed in her direction. "You leaked the financial irregularities to me through an anonymous drop, knowing I would try to use Andrew to expose you."
Sterling chuckled softly. "Dr. Vance, you always were brilliant in the laboratory, but you understood nothing about politics. We needed a scapegoat to wipe the slate clean before the federal audit next month. You walked right into our arms—and you brought Manhattan's most eligible billionaire down with you."
Victor Vance lunged forward, his face red with rage, pointing a shaking finger at Elizabeth. "Where is it? Where is the flash drive? Give it back, you bitch!"
"Shut your mouth, Victor," Sterling commanded coldly, raising a hand. Then he turned his gaze back to Andrew. "Hand over the drive, Andrew. Step away from the woman and the mute kid. We can still salvage your reputation if you sign over your voting shares to the executive committee by noon."
Andrew looked down at Alex. The boy was shaking violently, his hands clamped tightly over his ears, his eyes squeezed shut as the trauma of the hospital fire and the shattering door merged into one terrifying nightmare.
The silence that Alex had lived in for four months wasn't just sadness anymore. It was a barricade. And it was about to collapse entirely.
"No," Andrew whispered.
Sterling’s smile faded. "Excuse me?"
"I said no, Sterling," Andrew said, his voice rising, cutting through the tension of the room like a razor blade. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the small black flash drive, and held it up between his thumb and forefinger. "You want the data? You want my company? You want to destroy us?"
Andrew suddenly turned and threw the flash drive with all his might directly into the open garbage disposal of the kitchen sink across the hall, slamming his fist down on the wall switch.
CRUNCH-WHIRRR-SCRATCH.
The sound of metal grinding against steel echoed horribly through the penthouse. In three seconds, years of incriminating corporate evidence, offshore records, and billion-dollar proof were pulverized into gray metal dust and washed down the municipal drain.
Victor Vance screamed in horror, lunging toward the kitchen. "No! You idiot! That was our only leverage!"

Sterling’s face turned the color of ash, his professional composure shattering instantly. "You psychotic fool! You just destroyed everything!"
"I destroyed my company," Andrew replied, stepping out into the hallway with his shoulders squared, his eyes fixed on Sterling with terrifying calm. "Now, get the hell out of my house before I show these federal marshals the offshore tax evasion receipts I actually keep in my safe."
