Chapter 5 - THE TURN OF THE TIDEThe sickening crunch of bone echoed off the nursery walls as Julián staggered backward, completely caught off guard by the sheer, unbridled fury of a cornered husband. The heavy cinema camera slipped from the mercenary's shoulder, crashing hard onto the hardwood floor and shattering its lens into a thousand glittering pieces.

Julián recovered quickly, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the plush rug. His eyes narrowed with professional malice as he dropped into a lethal combat stance, lunging forward with a swift, brutal hook aimed directly at Mauricio’s ribs.
Mauricio ducked the blow by a millimeter, using his momentum to slam Julián sideways into the nursery bookshelf. Heavy hardcover medical books rained down on them, scattering across the floor.
“Get away from them!” Mauricio roared, driving his knee upward into the mercenary's midsection.
Julián doubled over, gasping for breath, before Mauricio grabbed him by the tactical vest and hurled him bodily out through the open French doors leading to the hallway, sending the hired operative crashing hard against the opposite wall.
In the center of the nursery, the room had gone deadly silent save for baby Mateo’s faint, exhausted whimpers.
Fernanda was slumped against the wall, her breathing shallow and ragged, clutching the baby to her chest like a lifeline. Her eyes met Mauricio’s through a haze of chemical exhaustion and tears.
“You... you came,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the rain lashing against the windowpanes.
Mauricio dropped to his knees beside her, ignoring the blood dripping from his own knuckles. He wrapped his arms around both of them, burying his face in Fernanda’s damp hair.
“I’m so sorry,” Mauricio choked out, his voice breaking with wave after wave of agonizing guilt. “I was blind. I let her poison you... I let her isolate you... I am so, so sorry, my love.”
Behind them, the cold, composed voice of Doña Elvira cut through the tender moment like a razor-sharp blade.
“A touching performance,” Elvira said, her voice dripping with venom as she smoothed the front of her expensive silk robe. She hadn't flinched once during the brawl. Instead, she stood tall, her pearl necklace gleaming under the moonlight. “You think a display of childish violence changes anything, Mauricio? You think beating up a hired contractor erases the legal reality?”
Mauricio slowly stood up, turning to face his mother. The man who had once sought her approval, who had trusted her word above his own wife's intuition, was completely gone. In his place stood a stranger carved out of pure ice and vengeance.
“The legal reality?” Mauricio’s voice was dangerously quiet. “There is no legal reality left, Mother. The cameras in this room didn't just stream to your lawyer’s server. They were backed up automatically to an off-site corporate cloud vault—a vault that Valeria doesn't even know exists.”
Elvira’s posture stiffened slightly. For the first time all night, the iron mask of absolute control cracked at the edges.
“You’re bluffing,” Elvira hissed.
“Am I?” Mauricio stepped forward, pulling a encrypted flash drive from his inner jacket pocket and holding it up under the nursery light. “Every prescription receipt, every forged bank transfer, every recorded conversation where you and Valeria discussed the hostile takeover of my life and my company—it’s all right here. And copies of it are currently sitting in the inbox of the federal prosecutor’s office, scheduled to drop automatically if my pulse stops for more than ten minutes.”
Elvira stared at the flash drive, her face draining of all color.

Downstairs, the heavy sound of sirens pierced through the stormy night air, growing louder and closer with every passing second.
The police had finally arrived—and they weren't the local precinct officers on Elvira's payroll. They were federal investigators.
