The live TV revelation caused an immediate media meltdown. Ofelia stammered, turned pale, and tried to yank off her microphone as the show abruptly went to a commercial break. But the damage was done. The financial investigation into the Salgado family was now open to the public eye.
When Arturo went back to his flagship shoe store to try to clear out his inventory before the legal seizure order took effect, he found the locks already changed. Standing outside was a woman he hadn't seen in six years: his estranged elder sister, Claudia.
"Claudia?" Arturo gasped, backing away. "What are you doing here?"
Claudia had been disowned by Doña Ofelia years ago because she married a working-class mechanic and refused to let Ofelia control her family. Since then, Ofelia had wiped Claudia's existence from family history, telling everyone that her only daughter had "died to the family."
"I'm the new manager of this property, Arturo," Claudia said, holding up a heavy ring of keys. "Appointed directly by the CEO of Grupo Alcázar."
Arturo couldn't process the betrayal. "You're working with her? With the woman who is destroying our mother?!"
"Mariana didn't destroy Mom. Mom destroyed herself," Claudia replied coldly. "Do you want to know where the cash gift envelopes from Dad's birthday party went, Arturo? The cash Dad kept asking about while you were getting arrested?"
Arturo stared at her. "Who took them?"
"Mom took them," Claudia revealed, pulling out copies of bank deposit receipts dated the morning after the party. "While you were sitting in that jail cell praying Mariana would save you, Mom sent her nephew to deposit 180,000 pesos in cash into her personal gambling account at the casino in Guadalajara. She didn't use a single peso to pay your bail. Dad had to liquidate his pension because Mom refused to touch 'her' money."

Arturo felt like the ground beneath him was opening up. His entire life had been built on the worship of a mother who had played him like a puppet, while he trampled on the one woman who had actually protected him.
CHAPTER 5 HOOK: Claudia tossed a thick envelope at Arturo's feet. "That's a subpoena, little brother. Dad just filed for a legal divorce from Mom, and he's suing you both for financial elder abuse. See you in court."
