Chapter 7 - The Final ConfrontationHeadline: "Doña Ofelia Comes Knocking on a Locked Door!"

Two months later, the dust began to settle, but for Doña Ofelia, the nightmare was reaching its peak. Abandoned by her husband Don Ernesto, who had moved into a quiet retirement community funded secretly by Mariana, Ofelia was living on a tiny monthly stipend provided by state assistance.
She had lost her friends, her social status, and her grand home.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Ofelia walked four miles in the pouring rain to the gated entrance of Las Fuentes, Zapopan's most elite private residential zone. She stood at the security booth, soaked to the bone, clutching a plastic bag containing a homemade batch of traditional cookies.
"I need to see my granddaughters," Ofelia wept to the gate guard. "Tell Mariana that their grandmother is here. I brought them sweets."
The guard looked at his monitor and called the main house. A few moments later, an electric golf cart pulled up to the gate. Mariana stepped out, holding a black umbrella over her head.
She didn't cross the barrier. She stood on her side of the gate, looking at the broken old woman standing in the rain.
"Mariana!" Ofelia cried through the iron bars. "Look at me! I am an old woman! I made a mistake! I was wrong about you! Please... let me see Regina and Luna. They need their grandmother!"
Mariana looked at Ofelia without anger, without malice—only with a cool, unyielding indifference that cut deeper than any insult.
"Regina and Luna don't need a grandmother who measures a child's worth by their gender," Mariana said steadily. "They don't need a grandmother who teaches them that they are second-class human beings destined to eat leftovers."

"I was raised in a different time!" Ofelia begged, placing her wet hands on the cold steel bars. "Arturo is ruined! He is working as a night-shift delivery driver! We have nothing left! Have you no mercy?!"
CHAPTER 7 HOOK: Mariana reached into her pocket and pulled out a small plastic object. She placed it gently on the security counter next to Ofelia's hands. It was the broken, chipped plate from the birthday party, glued back together with dark gold resin.
