Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING AT THE RECEPTION

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom closed behind Eleanor and me, shutting out the muted notes of the orchestra and the low hum of four hundred confused guests. The cool night air hit our faces, carrying the faint smell of jasmine from the resort gardens.
Eleanor stopped by a stone pillar, trembling slightly. She didn't cry—Eleanor was forged from iron, a woman who had worked twenty-hour shifts beside me in freezing warehouses when we had nothing. But the betrayal in her eyes cut deeper than any physical blow.
“Arthur,” she said, her voice shaking with a quiet, terrifying fury. “Who were you calling?”
I held up my phone, the screen glowing in the darkness. On the line was Marcus Vance, our senior corporate attorney and general manager of the family holding corporation, Apex Global.
“Marcus,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “Cancel everything. Close the master account. Freeze every liquid asset linked to Daniel’s personal accounts, the wedding vendors, and the escrow for his house.”
A sharp intake of breath echoed on the other end of the line, followed by instant, ruthless efficiency. “Right away, Mr. Harrison. Shall I also recall the fleet of luxury vehicles?”
“Everything,” I replied. “And have the local sheriff’s department meet me at the gate regarding a formal complaint of assault.”
Inside the ballroom, Vanessa and Daniel had no idea their entire empire had just evaporated with a single swipe of a finger. They were still basking in their manufactured victory, believing they had successfully rewritten history to erase the people who gave them everything.
Minutes later, the heavy doors flew open.
The music ground to a grinding, discordant halt. The massive crystal chandeliers vibrated as a collective gasp swept through the four hundred guests.
Vanessa stepped out onto the balcony, her face flushed with wine, champagne, and adrenaline. She expected to see us cowering in the parking lot. Instead, she saw Marcus Vance striding into the ballroom flanked by four uniformed sheriff’s deputies, their boots clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble floor.

Behind them, the massive LED screens surrounding the dance floor—which had been looping romantic photos of Daniel and Vanessa—suddenly flickered, blacked out, and flashed a single, terrifying word in bold red letters: AUDIT.
Vanessa’s smirk vanished. The room turned dead silent. And the true nightmare of their greed was about to begin.
