Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS COLLAPSES

The silence in the ballroom was so heavy you could hear the ice melting in the abandoned champagne flutes.
Vanessa’s face went from pale crimson to a ghostly, sickly white. She turned wildly toward the crowd, desperately trying to salvage her shattered reputation. “He’s lying! They’re just jealous! They’ve always hated me because I’m refined and they’re nothing but common factory trash!”
“Refined?” Eleanor spoke up for the first time, her voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade. She stepped forward, her posture regal and unyielding. “I built this company with my bare hands while your parents were still filing for Chapter 11. You raised your hand against me under my roof, using my money, wearing a dress I paid for.”
Daniel looked frantically between his mother and his new bride. “Mom… please. We can talk about this. In private. Not in front of everyone.”
“In private?” I echoed, letting out a cold, humorless laugh. “You watched her strike your mother, Daniel. You stood there and told her she was ruining the atmosphere. There is no private conversation left to have.”
Marcus signaled to the sheriff’s deputies. Two officers stepped forward, walking straight past the wedding cake and stopping directly in front of Vanessa.
“Vanessa Kensington,” the lead deputy said, pulling out a small notepad. “We have a formal complaint filed by Arthur Harrison for physical assault in the third degree, corroborated by multiple eyewitness statements and security footage.”
“Assault?!” Vanessa screamed, panic finally breaking through her haughty facade. “You can’t arrest me! I’m the bride! This is my wedding day!”
“It was your wedding day,” Marcus corrected her smoothly, tapping his watch. “As of two minutes ago, the venue reservation has been formally canceled. The catering staff is packing up, the open bar is closed, and the honeymoon flights to Santorini have been refunded to the corporate account.”
As if on cue, the doors to the banquet kitchen swung open. The head chef marched out, followed by dozens of servers in crisp uniforms, systematically removing the unfinished plates from the VIP tables.
The guests began scrambling out of their seats. Whispers turned into loud murmurs of disbelief as the elite socialites realized they were sitting in the middle of a collapsing financial fraud. High-society friends whom Vanessa had spent years trying to impress were already pulling out their phones, recording her humiliation for local gossip blogs.
Vanessa grabbed Daniel’s arm, her fingernails digging deep into his skin. “Do something! Tell them! Fix this!”
Daniel looked down at her hand, then slowly peeled her fingers away from his sleeve. The sheer desperation in his eyes was replaced by a hollow, sickening realization.
“I can’t,” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling. “The house… the car… the business accounts… they were all in my parents’ holding company.”

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. “You mean… you don’t have any money of your own?”
Daniel couldn’t even look her in the eye.
