Chapter 3 - THE MUSIC DIES, THE BILL ARRIVES

“What is the meaning of this?!”

Vanessa’s voice shrieked across the silent ballroom, shattering the illusion of fairy-tale perfection she had spent months constructing. She marched down the steps of the stage, her white silk gown sweeping behind her like a shroud of false pride.

Daniel followed closely behind, his face draining of color as he caught sight of Marcus Vance holding a thick stack of legal binders.

“Dad! What is going on?” Daniel demanded, his voice cracking as he tried to project an air of authority he never actually possessed. “Have you lost your mind? You’re ruining our wedding over a petty argument?”

I didn't answer him immediately. I stood at the threshold of the ballroom with Eleanor, our arms linked, watching the panic slowly ripple through the high-society guests who had spent the evening whispering behind our backs.

Marcus stepped forward, adjusting his tie with chilling professional calm. He didn't look at Daniel; he looked directly at the wedding planner, who was cowering near the catering table.

“Attention, everyone,” Marcus announced, his voice carrying effortlessly through the state-of-the-art sound system. “My name is Marcus Vance, general counsel for Apex Global. I have an announcement regarding the financial administration of tonight’s event.”

Vanessa lunged forward, trying to grab the microphone from the DJ’s stand. “Shut him up! Security, remove this man immediately!”

The two security guards who had tried to throw Eleanor and me out earlier stepped forward—then instantly froze. They looked at me, then at Marcus, and took three firm steps backward. They knew who signed their weekly paychecks.

“Under Section 4 of the master vendor agreement,” Marcus continued, unbothered, “all contracts for this venue, catering, open bar, entertainment, and floral arrangements are executed under corporate credit line ending in 4092. Effective three minutes ago, that account has been locked due to a breach of contract and an active criminal investigation for physical assault.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

“That’s impossible!” Vanessa shrieked, her face turning pale. “My father paid for this! My family is funding this entire wedding! These old frauds are just bitter peasants trying to ruin our big day!”

Daniel turned to me, his eyes wide with sheer panic. “Dad… tell him he’s lying. Tell everyone this is a joke.”

I stepped forward into the light of the chandelier, my gaze locked onto my son.

“Your father-in-law went bankrupt six months ago, Daniel,” I said calmly. “His manufacturing company folded, his assets were seized by the bank, and his last three checks to you bounced. Did you really think he could afford a four-hundred-thousand-dollar wedding at a five-star resort?”

Daniel staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. He turned to Vanessa, horror dawning in his eyes. “Vanessa… is that true?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. Her carefully crafted web of lies was unraveling thread by thread, and the four hundred witnesses in the room were staring at her with wide, judgmental eyes.
