Chapter 1 - THE WHISPER IN THE DARKBefore her brother, Leo, could clamp a hand over her mouth or drag her toward the exit, Maisie stepped out from the shadows of the support beam. Her white cane tapped rhythmically against the concrete floor—clack, clack, clack—a sound so fragile it felt like a crystal glass shattering in a room full of loaded guns.

"Maisie! No! Are you insane?!" Leo hissed, grabbing her shoulder with a grip so tight it bruised. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. This wasn't the neighborhood park or a quiet shelter; this was Julian Hart’s domain. A place where men were dissolved in acid for looking at the wrong boss the wrong way.

"Let go, Leo," Maisie said, her voice unnervingly calm. Her sightless eyes remained fixed straight ahead, guided entirely by the frantic, thumping heartbeat echoing through the cavernous space. "He’s terrified. Someone has to tell him it's over."

The crowd parted instantly, not out of courtesy, but out of sheer disbelief. Hardened criminals, drug runners, and gun-runners recoiled as if she were carrying a plague. Laughter erupted from the center of the ring. Julian Hart lowered his gloved hands, tilting his head as a cold, predatory smirk spread across his face.

"Well, well," Julian drawled, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "Look what crawled out of the woodwork. A little blind lamb walking straight into the lion's den. Are you lost, little girl, or did your parents forget to teach you how to stay alive?"

The men around him chuckled darkly. Leo threw himself in front of Maisie, his hands raised defensively, sweat pouring down his temples. "M-Mr. Hart, she’s blind! She doesn't know what she's doing. Please, we're leaving right now—"

"Quiet," Julian commanded. A single enforcer stepped forward, pressing the cold barrel of a suppressed pistol against Leo's temple. Leo froze, his breath hitching.

Julian stepped slowly toward Maisie, his heavy leather boots crunching on the dust. He stopped just inches away, towering over her small frame. He reached out, flicking one of her neat braids with a gloved finger. "You think you can calm that monster, little bird? One wrong move, and his jaws will snap your spine before you can even scream."

Maisie didn't flinch. She couldn't see the weapon pointed at her brother, but she could smell the copper tang of terror and the cheap cologne of tyranny clinging to Julian. She turned her face directly toward Julian's voice.

"You're wrong," Maisie whispered clearly enough for the entire silent arena to hear. "He's not a monster. You are."

Gasps echoed through the crowd. Julian’s smirk vanished, replaced by a dark, deadly fury that made even his closest lieutenants take a step back.
