Chapter 9 - A NEW ALLIANCE"You," Julian said, his voice softer now, stripped of the terrifying mafia boss veneer. "You didn't flinch once while bullets were flying inches from your head."

Maisie tilted her head up, her sightless eyes facing him with absolute serenity. "Bullets are loud, Mr. Hart. But fear is louder. You were more terrified than any of them."

Julian stared at her, stunned for the second time that night. A slow, genuine smile—something no one in his syndicate had seen in over a decade—touched the corners of his mouth.

"You're a remarkable girl, Maisie Doyle," Julian said. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy black leather briefcase. He popped the latches with a click, opening it to reveal neat stacks of banded, hundred-dollar bills totaling exactly one million dollars.

"Here," Julian said, pushing the case toward Leo, who stared at it like it was a ghost. "Your prize. You earned it."

"We can't take this," Leo stammered, shaking his head. "That's... that's too much. It's blood money."

"It's not blood money," Julian replied firmly. "It's a debt. And Julian Hart never leaves a debt unpaid." He stood up and looked down at Cyrus, who was now sitting patiently beside Maisie, gently resting his massive chin on her lap. The aggressive, shattered beast looked entirely transformed, peaceful and loyal.

Julian looked back at Maisie. "In fact... I have a proposition for both of you."

Maisie tilted her head. "What kind of proposition?"

"Cyrus doesn't belong here," Julian said quietly, glancing around the grim, blood-stained arena. "And neither do I, most days. I need someone to manage my security detail—someone who can read people without looking at them. And as for the dog... he refuses to leave her side."

Leo’s eyes widened. "You want us to work for... for you?"

"I want you to be safe," Julian corrected, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And as for the dog... he found his true master."
