Chapter 5 - SECRETS BENEATH THE SCARSThe digital timer glowed red: 04:45... 04:44...

In the center of the dirt arena, absolute stillness reigned. Cyrus, the terror of the underworld, sat stiffly at first, his muscles coiled like springs, but as Maisie’s fingers continued their slow, rhythmic tracing along his spine, the dog began to melt. A deep, rumbling growl of contentment—a purr so heavy it vibrated through the floor—rose from his chest.

Julian Hart stepped closer, ignoring the warnings of his top bodyguard. His eyes narrowed, studying the dog not as a weapon anymore, but as a puzzle he desperately needed to solve.

"How?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low as he stopped a few feet away. "I spent two hundred thousand dollars on elite military trainers from Germany. I had handlers who used electro-shocks and starvation. The beast wanted to tear every single one of them limb from limb. Why him? Why you?"

Maisie didn't look up—she couldn't—but she tilted her chin toward Julian's voice.

"Because you tried to break him," Maisie said simply, her fingers pausing on a jagged scar behind Cyrus's left ear. "Pain only teaches a creature how to fight back. You can't beat fear out of someone, Mr. Hart. Whether they have two legs or four."

Julian flinched. The words hit him with the precision of a sniper bullet, echoing memories he had buried deep beneath years of ruthless ambition and violence. A dark shadow crossed his scarred face, and for a split second, the fearsome mafia boss looked like a broken boy himself.

"You talk like you know a lot about pain for someone who hasn't lived a day," Julian muttered, though the venom in his tone was noticeably absent.

"Pain doesn't have a age, and it doesn't need eyes to be seen," Maisie replied quietly. "Cyrus wasn't aggressive. He was defending himself against a world that only ever wanted to use him."

02:10... 02:09...

The crowd watched in stunned silence. The tough guys, drug lords, and killers who usually thrived on bloodsports were standing there spellbound, watching a blind little girl soothe a demon dog.

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows near the back exit.

Julian’s head whipped around like a striking viper. "What was that?"
