Chapter 4 - The Glass CageThe ride to the Drake Harbor Logistics corporate tower on the Chicago River was made in absolute silence. The tinted windows of the Navigator locked out the city lights, turning the interior into a rolling tomb.

When the vehicle pulled into the private underground parking garage, Marcus escorted Bella not through the main lobby, but into a private, biometric-secured freight elevator that bypassed every floor until it Chimed at 61.
The penthouse suite looked identical to the night she had first entered it—except the floor-to-ceiling windows now framed a violent thunderstorm rolling over Lake Michigan, casting jagged bolts of lightning across the dark water.
Lucas Drake stood by the exact same window, holding a glass of amber whiskey. He hadn't aged a day, but the aura of suppressed violence radiating from him felt sharper, more concentrated.
He didn't turn around as she stepped out of the elevator, flanked by Marcus.
“Leave us,” Lucas said.
Marcus vanished back into the elevator without a sound, the heavy doors sealing shut.
For a long moment, the only sound was the distant rumble of thunder. Then, Lucas turned around. His gaze swept over Bella, tracking every defensive posture, every micro-tremor in her hands, before locking dead onto her stomach.
“Five months,” Lucas said, his voice dangerously low. “And you thought you could hide a corporate asset inside a basement apartment in Evanston?”
“It’s not an asset,” Bella snapped, her fear momentarily overridden by a sudden surge of fierce, maternal fury. “It’s a child. My child.”
Lucas set his glass down on the glass table with a sharp clink. He closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, stopping just inches away. He was taller than her, imposing, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and ozone.
“Biology doesn't care about your semantics, Bella,” he murmured, his hand reaching out.
Bella flinched, expecting him to grab her arm, but his large, warm palm brushed lightly, almost hesitantly, against the fabric of her sweater, resting directly over her belly. A faint, phantom kick pulsed against his palm.
Lucas froze. The ruthless, untouchable mafia boss of Chicago looked momentarily paralyzed, staring down at her stomach as if he had just touched an unexploded bomb.
“It’s real,” he whispered, the hardness draining from his voice for a single, vulnerable second, replaced by something dark and obsessive.
“Stay away from us,” Bella choked out, swatting his hand away and stumbling backward. “I don’t want your money, I don’t want your empire, and I sure as hell don’t want your life!”
Lucas slowly lowered his hand, his eyes hardening back into flint. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his lips.
“You think this is about what you want, Bella?” He walked over to his mahogany desk, picked up a thick manila folder, and dropped it heavily onto the surface. “Open it.”
Bella hesitated, her hands shaking as she pulled out the contents.
It was a complete dossier on her entire life: her mother’s medical records, her university transcripts, her new job performance reviews at Vanguard Transport—and right beneath them, a stack of certified legal documents detailing an impending federal indictment against Vanguard Transport for multi-million-dollar embezzlement.
Bella gasped, dropping the papers. “This... this isn't real. Our books are clean!”
“Your books were clean,” Lucas corrected smoothly, leaning against the desk. “Until an anonymous whistleblower uploaded three hundred forged wire transfers originating directly from your terminal thirty minutes ago.”
Bella stared at him in horror. “You... you framed me?”
“I secured you,” Lucas corrected, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying finality. “You have two choices, Bella. You can walk out those doors right now, get arrested by federal marshals within ten minutes for a crime you didn't commit, and spend the next twenty years in a maximum-security penitentiary while state services take my child the second it’s born.”

He paused, letting the crushing weight of his ultimatum settle over her.
“Or,” Lucas continued, walking slowly toward her like a predator backing its prey into a corner, “you sign a marriage license, move into this penthouse, and step into the role of Mrs. Lucas Drake. Because in this city, no one touches my wife, and no one steals my heir.”
