Chapter 5 - The Golden Cage and the ViperThe wedding was not a celebration; it was a hostile corporate merger executed with terrifying efficiency.

There were no white dresses, no church bells, and no cheering guests. Just a corrupt municipal judge standing in the private gallery of the Drake Tower while two armed bodyguards served as witnesses. Bella signed her name in neat, elegant accounting script, feeling every stroke carve another piece out of her soul.

By nightfall, she was officially Mrs. Lucas Drake, mistress of a sprawling architectural masterpiece in the sky, and prisoner to the most feared man in the Midwest.

Yet, living inside the dragon’s lair revealed truths even more terrifying than the legends.

Three weeks into their bizarre coexistence, Bella discovered that Lucas’s empire wasn't just built on logistics and port authority bribes—it was built on blood feuds, hidden debts, and a silent, brutal war with the Chicago Outfit’s remaining factions, led by an aging, vindictive mobster named Salvatore "Sal" Moretti.

It happened on a rainy Thursday afternoon while Lucas was out of the country handling a port acquisition in Rotterdam.

Bella was sitting in the massive, sterile kitchen, sipping chamomile tea and trying to read a textbook on corporate tax law, when the penthouse security alarms suddenly didn't go off—they clicked off, one by one, in a dead, synchronized silence.

Her blood ran cold. The power hadn't failed; the system had been bypassed from the inside.

Slowly, she stood up, sliding a heavy ceramic kitchen knife off the marble island. She crept toward the grand hallway leading to the private elevator.

The elevator doors chimed softly.

They didn't open to reveal Marcus Vance or Lucas’s loyal security detail. Instead, three men stepped out, wearing tactical vests and black ski masks. Leading them was a short, stocky man with a diamond pinky ring and a jagged scar slicing across his cheek—Victor Moretti, Sal Moretti’s ruthless enforcer.

“Well, well, well,” Victor purred, his raspy voice echoing through the opulent hallway as he spotted Bella standing frozen by the kitchen archway. “The boss’s brand-new little trophy wife. Rumor had it Lucas married a cheap hotel cleaner, but I didn't think she’d be stupid enough to stay.”

Bella gripped the handle of the knife until her knuckles turned white, shielding her protruding seven-month belly with her other arm. “Get out of here. Marcus will be back any minute—”

Victor laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Marcus isn't coming back, sweetheart. Right about now, his convoy down on the Kennedy Expressway is meeting a very fiery end. And as for your precious husband? He’s flying blind over the Atlantic.”

Victor took a step forward, pulling a silenced pistol from his holster. “Sal Moretti wants a message delivered to Lucas Drake. And what better way to send it than by taking away his most prized, closely guarded secret?”

Panic surged through Bella—not for herself, but for the child growing inside her. She didn't freeze. Years of poverty, survival, and protecting her dying mother had forged a core of steel beneath her quiet exterior.

As Victor lunged forward to grab her arm, Bella didn't scream. She drove the ceramic blade straight down with every ounce of strength she possessed, burying it deep into his shoulder.

Victor shrieked in agony, dropping his gun as blood spurted across the pristine white marble floor.

The two henchmen cursed, drawing their weapons and charging forward. Bella turned and sprinted toward the private panic room hidden behind the master bedroom’s bookshelf—a feature Lucas had drilled into her during her first week of confinement, warning her that enemies would eventually come looking for his weak spot.

She slammed the heavy steel vault door shut just as bullets cracked against the exterior, spinning the combination wheel with frantic, practiced precision.

Click.

The deadbolts slid home, locking her safely inside total darkness. But as Bella collapsed against the cold steel wall, panting for breath, her phone—which she had clutched tightly in her hand—suddenly buzzed against her palm.

It was an encrypted satellite notification from Lucas. The message consisted of a single GPS coordinate in the middle of Lake Michigan and three chilling words:

They found us. Run.
