Chapter 9 - The Stolen LegacySix months later, tucked away in a quiet, sun-drenched coastal village in southern Portugal where the Atlantic breeze smelled of salt and wild thyme, Bella sat on a white-washed stone terrace watching a six-month-old baby boy with striking, piercing gray eyes chase a stray cat across the cobblestones.

Leo.

She had named him after the quiet resilience of her mother and the fierce, unyielding survival instinct she had inherited from her own blood.

With the millions she had successfully redirected before leaving Chicago, she had established the Helen Carter Foundation, providing free end-of-life care and medical debt relief to impoverished families across three continents. She lived under an assumed name, managed a small local olive oil cooperative, and for the first time in her life, she felt truly safe.

Or so she thought.

It was a warm Tuesday afternoon when the village postman dropped a heavy, unsealed manila envelope onto her outdoor wooden table. There was no return address, no postmark, and no stamps. Just her current residential address written in clean, precise, unmistakable accounting script.

Bella’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was not a threat. It was a single, heavy brass key embossed with the insignia of the Port of Chicago, and a handwritten note in sharp, elegant fountain pen ink:

“An empire isn't built on concrete and steel, Bella. It’s built on legacy. I gave you the world, and you gave me a son. Enjoy the quiet while it lasts. The harbor is waiting for the heir.”

— L.

Before Bella could even stand up, the quiet hum of a sleek, black electric car drifted up from the narrow coastal road below.

She walked quickly to the stone balcony and looked down. Parked by the edge of the olive grove was a black Mercedes sedan. Standing beside the vehicle, leaning calmly against the door with his hands tucked into his tailored trousers, was Marcus Vance.

And stepping out from the back seat, adjusting his cuffs with the calm, terrifying authority of a man who owned the very ground he walked on, was Lucas Drake.
