Chapter 8 - The Ashes of an EmpireForty-eight hours later, sitting in the cramped, salt-crusted captain’s quarters of a rusted freighter cutting through the choppy, grey waters of Lake Michigan toward the St. Lawrence Seaway, Bella watched the Chicago skyline recede into a thick morning fog.

The news broadcasts playing softly on the cabin’s small television screen were broadcasting a financial earthquake of historic proportions.
“—Federal authorities have raided the downtown headquarters of Drake Harbor Logistics following an anonymous massive data leak containing decrypted offshore accounts, implicating CEO Lucas Drake in international smuggling, municipal corruption, and corporate fraud. Trading of Drake stock has been permanently halted, and federal warrants have been issued for—”
The screen flickered and went black as Thomas reached over and clicked off the television.
“They won't catch him, you know,” Thomas said quietly, leaning against the wooden desk as he poured two cups of black coffee. “Guys like Lucas don't go to prison. They just vanish into the shadows of their own offshore bank accounts.”
Bella didn't answer. She sat in the captain’s leather chair, her hand resting gently on her swollen stomach. She didn't care where Lucas went, as long as he stayed out of her world.
She had used her accounting genius, combined with the encrypted financial backdoor she had secretly copied from Vanguard Transport’s primary server before fleeing, to systematically drain three hundred million dollars from Lucas’s primary holding accounts and disperse them across five hundred verified orphanages and public hospital funds across the globe—including the exact emergency medical fund at Lakeshore County Hospital that had once held her mother’s body hostage.
She had stripped the empire down to bare bone, leaving the legendary mafia king a pauper in the eyes of the law.
Suddenly, the ship’s satellite radio crackled to life, breaking the static with a deep, unmistakable, painfully familiar voice.
“Bella.”
Bella froze, her hand gripping the edge of the desk.
The voice was coming through an unencrypted, direct-frequency maritime channel.
“You played the game better than I did,” Lucas’s voice continued, eerily calm, cutting through the hum of the ship’s diesel engine. “You took the money, you burned the empire, and you slipped through every trap I laid.”
Bella reached out, her finger hovering over the radio’s transmission toggle, her heart pounding in her throat.
“There’s just one thing you forgot, my brilliant little accountant,” Lucas whispered, a dark, haunting cadence echoing across the waves. “You can change your name, you can cross oceans, and you can hide behind stolen dockworker papers... but you carry my blood. And an empire doesn't stay buried for long.”
The transmission clicked dead, replaced by the howling wind of the open lake.

Bella stared out the porthole as the freighter plunged forward into the endless fog. She didn't feel fear. She felt the fierce, undeniable kick of her child against her palm.
The war wasn't over. It was only just beginning.
