Chapter 10 - The Ultimate CheckmateBella didn't run.

She didn't reach for a phone, and she didn't scream for help. Instead, she turned around, scooped little Leo up into her arms, and walked calmly down the stone steps of the terrace into the sunlit garden just as the heavy iron gate clicked open.
Lucas stopped ten feet away. He looked slightly weathered, a faint scar running along his jawline from the rooftop shootout in Chicago, but his gray eyes burned with an intense, unyielding fire as they locked onto the baby in her arms.
Leo didn't cry. The infant simply stared back at the man with the exact same piercing, unapologetic gaze.
“You found us,” Bella said, her voice completely steady, carrying no trace of fear.
“It’s not hard to find what belongs to you, Bella,” Lucas replied, his voice low and smooth as he took a slow step forward. “You thought you could strip my accounts, dismantle my ports, and run halfway across the world. But you forgot one fundamental rule of accounting.”
Bella raised an eyebrow, adjusting the baby against her hip. “And what’s that?”
A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of Lucas’s mouth—not cold, but devastatingly confident.
“You can never outrun a closed ledger, Bella. Because every asset you stole, every foundation you built, and every dollar you distributed... was legally channeled through a shell corporation that I registered under your name three days before our wedding.”
Bella’s eyes widened in stunned realization. The foundation, the orphanages, the medical debt relief—it wasn't independent. It was tied directly to his master corporate web.
“You... you let me do it,” she whispered.
“I didn't just let you do it,” Lucas corrected, stepping close enough now that she could feel the heat of his presence. He reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing a stray curl from baby Leo’s forehead, the child instinctively grabbing onto Lucas’s finger with tiny, fierce hands. “I funded it. I cleared the path. Because I didn't want a frightened hotel cleaner or a fugitive wife. I wanted an equal.”
Lucas looked back up into her eyes, the ruthless mafia king entirely disarmed by the tiny hand holding his finger.
“The Chicago ports are gone, Bella. The old guard is dead. Drake Harbor Logistics is officially dissolved, and my old life is buried in the Atlantic.” He paused, offering her his hand—not as a threat, not as a warden, but as an invitation. “I built an empire on blood and secrets. But you... you built a legacy on redemption. Are we going to keep running, Mrs. Drake, or are we going to build something real?”
May you like
Bella looked down at Leo, then up at the man who had torn her world apart only to rebuild it at her feet. She didn't smile, but slowly, deliberately, she reached out and placed her hand in his.
The game of survival was over. The true empire was just beginning.
