Chapter 7 - The Underground AllianceThe damp chill of the subterranean tunnels bit deep into Bella’s clothes as she navigated the labyrinth of concrete pipes beneath the Chicago River. Her breath came in ragged, painful gasps, her hands slick with a mixture of grime and dried blood from her scraped elbows.

She needed to get out of the city—not just away from Lucas, but away from the entire network of ports, logistics hubs, and shipping lanes that answered to his name. But in Chicago, every camera, every toll booth, and every transit card was wired into Drake Harbor Logistics’ proprietary surveillance grid.

As she rounded a rusted iron junction near the old pump station, a low, metallic click echoed through the dark corridor.

“Don’t move or I’ll blow your kneecaps off before you can take another breath.”

Bella froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.

From the shadows of a disused maintenance alcove stepped a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a faded dockworker's jacket and a knitted cap. In his hands, he held a suppressed submachine gun, pointed squarely at her chest.

Then, the man lowered the barrel slightly, his eyes widening beneath the dim glow of an emergency light bulb. He looked past her dirt-streaked face down to her heavily rounded, eight-month pregnant belly.

“Holy Mother of God,” the man whispered, lowering the gun entirely. “You’re Bella Carter. Or... Mrs. Drake, I suppose.”

Bella stepped back against the damp concrete wall, her hands defensively wrapping around her stomach. “Who are you? If you’re one of Moretti’s men, or one of Lucas’s goons—just get it over with.”

The man let out a dry, humorless chuckle, stepping closer into the light. He had a rugged, weather-beaten face etched with deep scars and sharp, intelligent brown eyes.

“Name’s Thomas Vance,” he said, extending a calloused hand that Bella ignored. “Marcus’s older brother. Former head of internal security for Drake Logistics before my dear little brother and our benevolent boss decided I knew too much about where the bodies from the 2018 port strike were actually buried.”

Bella’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. “A Vance? How do I know this isn't another one of Lucas’s elaborate traps?”

Thomas pulled out a battered silver flask, took a quick swig, and tossed it toward her. She caught it out of instinct.

“If Lucas wanted you dead, you wouldn't have made it three feet out of that panic chute,” Thomas said bluntly. “He’s currently up on the sixty-first floor finishing off Sal Moretti’s remaining lieutenants. The entire building is on lockdown. Federal alphabet agencies are raiding the lobby as we speak, but Lucas has already paid off half the district attorney’s office to stall them for twenty minutes.”

Thomas stepped closer, his expression turning deadly serious.

“You want out, Bella? You want to vanish where Lucas Drake’s greedy hands can never reach you or that baby?”

Bella looked down at the silver flask in her hands, then back up at the man standing before her—a man who hated Lucas just as much as she did.

“More than anything,” Bella said, her voice steady and resolute.

“Good,” Thomas smiled grimly, pulling a set of forged dockworker identification badges and a set of keys from his pocket. “Because my cargo ship leaves for international waters in forty minutes. And you’re going to help me dismantle Lucas’s entire empire from the outside in.”
